Hey everybody, did this today:



My question: How to paint the ocean? I can see it quite clearly, but I can't duplicate it, or even get the right feeling. When direct light hits the water, there's lots of sparkly highlights and little whitecaps. How the hell am I supposed to draw that?

I'd be really interested in seeing other people's interpretations of this scene. I know it's not very exciting, but spooge, Liquid, anybody, I'd like to see how you would do it. This (and the one in the Gallery forum) is my first "landscape," and I'm at a bit of a loss. So any help would be much appreciated! Thanks.

Here's another from later in the day. The water was deeper in color, with less direct sunlight striking the surface. I didn't change the clouds because I'm lazy.

Well first off I'd keep a closer blue(sky) to that of the first pic.
Now the white caps are nasty and truthfully I would find it virtually impossible myself(having no clue). I suggest looking at the real thing eg photo/postcards etc.

Henrik - beautiful overpaint. Love the work on the water surface. Understand the point you're making about the sparkly bits being a reflection of the light source and being stronger there. Would prolly have added a bit more sparkle, but nothing to add otherwise.

sacrelicious, I'm still struggling with painting myself, so I don't have much in the way of advice. I like the work you did on the first picture, though I find that effect to be pretty difficult to render accurately too. You did a pretty good job far as i could tell.

Wow, henrik, that's exactly what I was talking about. You've captured both the surface of the water and the highlights perfectly! Your clouds are better too! How did you do it?

henrik: Those hills (islands) in the distance give the ocean so much depth.

Brue: I love the rough ocean effect. Yours doesn't really suck, it might not be as refined as the rest of the painting but it still gets the point across.
