These are some sketches i just doodled; I'm trying to get a concept for a mascot for my online portfolio. This is what came out at the first try...nothing too amazing, but a start, just felt like posting something.

Tell me what you think about it...

the head seems too cute for the body.. like way to muscular... try toning him down a bit.. give him a body that would be alot like a tall version of 'Bone'.

that would make him cool..

or... make a litle more vicious looking in the head... that would look cool too.

Good Start,

I think I would have to agree about the head in relation to body. Moving the body design to match with the style of the head sounds good to me.

Maybe you have to ask yourself what it is you want the mascot to say about your site and maybe more importantly about you.

I like the feel of the pose inside the circle. cute, fun, and cool.

Iwant to see more please.

I think it's a great character.

I have been playing Jet Grind Radio for Dreamcast and I'm in a Graffitti mood right now. What I would reccomend is, instead of posing the mascot doing normal things like holding a ball or leaning on his arm... make very abstract poses that are more about action than presentation.

Also, if you've seen the cover art for Sonic Adventure for Dreamcast, Sonic is in a very action-packed pose (it all fits in a circle-shape). That's the type of thing your character would look great doing - different poses though

If you make it more abstract, then it will have more of a sub-conscious impact on the viewer. This is the opposite of for example, a badly drawn web page interface. (at least, this is how my brain works... :P )

Awe: Yes, I feared it would not blend. I tried to do something that was cute and funny without looking weak or helpless. I will keep the head and try to reduce the muscular impression as far as necessary to make the styles blend.

Yama80: Thanks! What I want to express in that character is some "2 in 1"-thing, I guess. On the other hand I just want something to add life to my site, with the best part of both worlds (cool/cute). This appears to be quite a task... More? Ok, sketches on the way, please check back later.

lesssster: you appear to have invented "Bone"

Sergenth: Thanks, unfortunately I've seen none of the titles you talk about, but I'll try to look'em up on the net. You are right, action poses have more impact on the viewer, but I think non-moving poses should come first, to get a concept for the anatomy of your creation. When that is set, I will make him go nuts with action...

Thanks again for your feedback, guys, I'll post some update, so please check back later to give some more crits.

Inspirational , and sw33t at the same time , don't think if changing the head, the feet and fingers, its wicked .

I only thing is that the torso may need a bit of a changing

Hm. Didn't have much time on my hands, so this is what i did taking your crits into account.
The biggest on the left comes close to what i think will do fine. The action pose could be more cute, looks a little mean. That's not what I imagined about him. I fear he might get a little too Abe-like (-> Abes Oddyssey) when cutified, though.

v1510nAry: Thanks, I thought the same thing...

dangermouse: Don't worry, he's not gonna hurt anybody.

Heeeeyyy that looks like my cat now...

actually I like it. the body doesnt seem so out of place anymore. He doesnt look too muscular but hes not a weakling either..

This is much better.. good job!

-awe

oh you wanted crits... ok well the only big crit I think I could give would be... clean up the lines. that would help out alot. define his body poses with crisp edges. that would make him a cool mascot.

one suggestion would be to go pick up a decent comic book and study the lines in that.. see how the lines get thicker and thinner, accentuating and adding a level of depth. do that to this little guy and he'll be realy cool...

Awe: If it looks like THIS it is no cat. You better watch that critter in your rooms closely.
Thanks a lot, good to hear you like it.
Sure the lines are very rough, this is just what i got out putting the pencil on the page. When I get close enough with the sketches to really know, what I have to draw, I'll make a clean drawing and ink it. If I'm going to color him, he's going to be yellow. Completely.

strata: Yeah, good idea! Maybe you can lend me yours? tsk tsk
