Here's a painting I've been fooling around with lately. Its a residence made out of a converted turbine. But it needs something. I think it is a composition problem. Aside from that, does everything else look OK? (micke, spooge, joachim, experienced painters help me out please).

I'm not an experienced painter by any means but what it looks like it need to me is something recognizable to help show the scale... when i looked at it first (before reading your post) it seemed like a close up view of a small object rather than a far off view of a large one. Perhaps a figure or animal or even a simple vehicle would make it easier to pick up on... I do however really like the way it's painted

Looks good, I think it supposed to be big?
here's a suggestion on the lighting, don't forget about the ambient sky lighting back into the shadows, and the shadow of the turbine on the ground from that source.

Rube-yeah, it's supposed to be big. In no way was I planning on taking it this far. I was just painting over a little doodle of mine, so giving it an impression of scale wasn't on my mind. I agree with you that it doesn't look big.
Spooge- Thanks alot! Your lighting is much more appropriate considering it's a desert. Harsh lighting makes much more sense. And thanks for the additonal advice! |

HA! Man, when I first saw this one, I thought you'd jumped back into PRODUCT design! These guys are right, it needs something to indicate some sort of scale. I wouldn't force it, though, with just a figure, because then you could lose the coolness you have working for you in this piece. And by coolness I mean, you've nailed the desolate-ness of the desert, and the converted turbine concept is awesome. Maybe some oil drums scattered around the base? More clutter? It seems a fairly clean scene for a desert home. The suggestion for deeper shadows is good, but don't envelope your entire scene with darks. You could lose what you have going for you in that awning and base of the structure. Perhaps some figures walking down from the back, upper right? Indicating distance and depth? Just a thought. Maybe I'll try to post an example. Cool stuff, man, I'm psyched to see more!!!

Probably a poor example, but here goes...I would still adjust the shadows more, as well.
