I tried to do something in Painter for the first time tonight. I had a calendar with pictures of norwegian nature laying around, picked a reference there. What I like with Painter, was that I worked very non-computerish. I didn't care about the small details at all, which I have a tendency of doing in Photoshop. What I didn't like, was the lagging. Using big brushes is impossible. I
'm a Mac-user, but I have tried to brighten the image a bit.
What do you think so far? Do you like the compostion? Would you like more foreground? I want more water in the front...
Please crit.

ah, nice image and nice exercise Yup, that must be up in "nordmarka"
crit: I feel that the colors are a bit gaudy (if that's a word ? ) too saturated in a way. I guess it's the brown color on the surface I react a bit on (too much green in it maybe ?!? ), but becuause of that one, I also feel that the bluish tone on the water could be with more green in it !??. I'm way off my league here
anyway, nice work......Maybe I'll do something like this one day too, looks fun

Hi Wyatt, you are right. It is unfinished.
Hi Joachim, thanks for the critics. I don't know if it is in Nordmarka, but it's definitively some place on stlandet. I got your point about the gaudy colors. Maybe it lacks contrast over all? I have worked more on it. I have tried to do something about the water, and also there's more detail.
This time I left the brightness untouched. Maybe it comes out a bit dark.
I hope someone has some critics.

I have done some more updates. You should see stones and grass under the water surface to the right. If not, it shows up too dark.
(Again) Please critic. What do you think should be improved?
Judging by the tremendous response, it's either a shitty pic or a really boring piece.

nice one kjetil
i prefered the colors of the first one maybe it was a little satured but the colours where less deep, giving more integrity to the pic; maybe you should play around with contrast ; desaturating some of the blues
keep it up
bye

I think the main problem, is the saturation of the colors. Right now it looks pretty cartoony.
I played around with the picture a bit to show you what I mean..
hope it helps..

Nicely drawn!
Binke, good call!
Perhaps you could draw in some subsurface stuff that fades in closer towards the viewer. Plants, rocks, mud.. Water becomes less reflective the closer the viewing angle comes to being perpendicular.

Hi Toast, thanks for the critics. Binke, you have a good point. I think that is the way to go. I'd really like to see how this turns out on a PC, but that is no excuse - the colors are too strong. I never intended it to be as realistic as it turned out to be. The way you turned the colors also changed the mood in the image.
Danny, thanks. About the subsurface stuff... I have tried to put something there, doing exactly what you describe. But maybe I should do it clearer. Also maybe I should add more of it? I don't think I should put in too much... Try saving the image and play around with the brightness, you'll see some stuff popping out..
I guess I'll also go with Binke, Jezebel.
This gave me some inspiration to put a few more hours in the picture. Thanks.

Nice work! I think Binke is right, however, I would do a combination of both. That is to de-saturate colors that are receding due to more "air-particles" between the viewers eyes and the subjects, and more saturation as things are closer...
BTW - I have the same problem with painter on the Mac. What kind of hardware/video card are you using?

Hi Liquid,
That is a good point. I'll try to do that, then I'll post it in the Gallery... (Like we're supposed to? )
I have a 400Mhz G3 Powerbook, 320 Mb ram. I hook it up on a 21"Studio Display. I love the flexibilty, but the graphics card could perhaps be better. I get better resolution with my new PC, where I have a Abit Siluro Geforce 32 mb. I still lack a lot of software on it, so I haven't started painting on it yet. I'm very happy with my Mac, but think it's sad that PC's and Mac's show colors so different. I guess you are a Mac user yourself?

Kjetil -
I actually use both Macs and PCs. But I do most of my work on my Mac. I just prefer the Pshop performance and the OS.
I agree with you though, my calibration on my Mac screen versus my PC is night and day. The difference is quite amazing. Just another thing that tends to drive me crazy.
