ok -i've always been of the opinion that you're either naturally good at drawing & improve or you're not and that's it - i think i'm of the latter. seeing all the cool artwork here really made me want to have a go
this is my first sketch ever - be honest do you think there's any hope or shall i just not waste my time and find something else to do? is it bad?

when you say first sketch ever, do you mean on paper like first sketch EV ER, or first time using a wacom or something? cause everyone sucks for the first couple years of drawing, i dont care who you are Just remember practice, practice, practice and draw whenever you can yioull get good. btw I dont think for most people, me atleast, drawing isnt something i could just give up or change hobbies, i dont know why i do it or feel compelled to its just what i do.

Here's the secret, it all started when you were really young but old enough to start having friends. Those who were naturally popular and got on well with people went out and played with their new found friends while those who didn't stayed home and drew while waiting for their favorite cartoons to come on the tele. The cartoon for me was Scooby Doo because they are so easy to relate to, always happy, up beat and hungry.

Later on you get to going to school but you find that the curriculum is boring so you start drawing in the margins of all your books and you get so into it that you do it during recess instead of playing sports or something, besides you suck at sports anyway. This continues all the way through high school and then your parents confront you about what ou want to do for college and you say that you want to go to art school. The rest is a blur then you start working then one day blends into the next until one day you hear someone playing the banjo and decide that the ticket. So you rush out and buy one and start taking lessons from a burnt out hippie.

Merg, I love the story. I can relate to all that except the banjo thing. That part's kooky.

Papergirl, never too late to start. Just draw all you can, and look to others for inspiration and knowledge, not discouragement.

People that can "innately" draw do have an edge, but more often than not, it's those that really have to work at it that become the best, as they don't get lazy. Just about anyone can learn to draw better, and better, it just takes a lot of practice, and learning. I've been drawing since I was 10, okay and all, but I was more popular than the other type of artist mentioned, and played sports as well, so just now that I'm seriously paying attention at age 21, am I making real progress. Get books, take classes, look at great work as inspiration, or a goal, or hell to learn from!
