I'm kinda having to decide whether to work on a looser form of painting or whether to go back to the crisp edged airbrushed pics that I used to do.
Anyway, here's a wee speed pic that took about and hour or so.
It would be quite cool to have another speed pics thread like the one Rinaldo posted a while ago.

there is no reason to do one and not the other, ceenda.
from the looks of this I'd say you do both very well, you're never gonna hit a peak where you're as good as you're gonna get. Keep on goin do what makes you happy.
BTW love it, your ability turns me green :

I'm jealous as well. I need to retrieve my tablet..... back to the picture. Very nice. I've seen water much more rust red than that, don't worry about the saturation.
Do both styles, as said above. |

the water is nice, if a bit too saturated.

ceenda, i always enjoy your nature paintings. great composition, really cool colors, and i love the simple way you've rendered the ripples in the water. how do you pick a palette to work with? do you just pick colors from your mind's eye as you go, or do you have a more defined technique?
i've experimented with throwing down a few colors, mixing them all up, and working from there. (like a traditional palette) i find that creates colors i'd never imagine using.
another thing i've tried for situations with weird lighting is to draw the image with really basic fluorescent-light time lighting, and then play with the color balance, hue, etc and see how it affects the colors. from there you can pick colors for the large painting.
look forward to hearing other methods to help the mind's eye out.

Thanks to everyone for their comments and crits!
el tigre: Cheers. It's nice to have you back again, not heard from you in ages! You still skateboarding on Bristo Square?
jeffery: Thanks for your comments. I generally pic out colours as I go along. I found this when doing traditional media as well. I don't usually go for a predefined palette of colours, I often just select colours as I go along. Hope this helps. ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/smile.gif) |

I basically color with almost any color (close to the one I want), then adjust the Hue/Saturation until I am satisfied. |

I agree with others and the atmosphere is great. If I was a turtle (or something like that) I'm sure I would love to live in your pic ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/smile.gif) |

Ceenda,
Nice image.
I was doing tons of these things, but I migrated to a new computer and had to ditch them. But I really need to do more, so thanks for reminding me
I like this kind of thing much more than airbrushy, overly rendered stuff. In fact, I would try to do more of these and try to simplify as much as possible. That's what my next round of speed pics will be, trying to go with a simple value system from the start and trying to render shapes as simply as I can.
On this one I think you looked at the important elements and nailed them. Except IMO you could've gone redder in some of the shadowed water, instead of going black. BTW, was this done from a photo? |
