I posted this in the old forums the day of or before the split so I'll just throw it up here to see what people think.
In the original thread I stated that this started as a simple warmup before I got started on some actual work. I got a few decent comments so I couldn't stop there without adding a bit more detail to what I had. I'm posting a scan of the image that I was looking at occasionally for it's compostion and color bases...in other words, I wasn't trying to copy the image to it's exactness.
I may finish this up sometime soon, perhaps adding my own completely original character in there 'cuz right now the figure there is mostly a placeholder not meant to do more than resemble Maximus in the reference.
Ok, shutting up and posting the images
the blocking in...
the reference...
and the second pass...
Critique away

Dryfire: yeah, I didn't spend too much time on the figure...planned on replacing him with something of my own design. I'll be sure to make sure there's some more detail in the new figure though.
Chapel: I'm getting there, man, I'm getting there!!! I remember your suggestion, heh...I'm making sure to fix that in the update.
faustgfx: agreed...I guess you can tell where most of the 35-40 minutes were spent :\
Wyatt Turner: thanks man, I'll be fooling with the light rays and such a tad though. And yes, lots of work went into the ground beyond the blocking in phase...lots and lots of tiny, tiny strokes takes a long time to do.
Unless I fall asleep at my computer I'm hoping to post an update sometime tonight. If anybody has more comments feel free to add since I'll be checking from time to time.
Thanks all.
