The aswer to that is already stated in your question. "a very popular place", that's exactly what's wrong with it, a lot of talentless people try something and post it up there because it's the most obvious place to go for digital art stuff. I even saw deviantart adds on a games website a while back.
This place is fortunatly visited by a lot of people who know what they are talking about. Basicly because you have to be into this scene a little to be familiar with forums like this.
I'd rather have 4 positive reactions to an artpiece in this forum then 20 of people at deviantart.
I do think the idea behind deviant art is very good though. And i'm happy there is such a large website ment for the purpose of digital art. I'm even more happy with this forum though, i was delighted to see how everybody handles eachother with respect in this place. Most forums i regurly visit are nothing but flaming and argueing.

hurray for sijun.com 8-)

agree with r3t.
since deviantart ist kind of too popular you'll never get the feeling of a community, people you know after some time, people where you know that they're way better than you but they help you as further as they can.
sijun.com forever

80% of the arts in there are completely unoriginal (abstract, filterific PS images, artsyfartsy photography....etc) And also most of the paintings in there are fake. Oh, the average age there is like 12.....Deviant art is a good example of what a digital art community should NOT be.

Along the lines of Dev Art, Deskmod.com is planning on launching an art sight soon called Pixel Attic. http://www.deskmod.com/paintro/

Hopefully it will improve where DevArt fails and succeed where dev art and here succeed

End spamming...

And ConceptArt is also a site where I've seen many amazing things and learned much.

But I like deskmod and see much of the same community there that i see here. I expect nothing less from Pixel Attic when it launches. And perhaps member here sick of DA can help make PA into the site that they would love to see DA be.

YEAH WE HAVE A COMPETITION VS BETWEEN THE TWO.

RECENTLY JANSON MANLY AND HIS HAXOR TEAM HAXORED OUR EATPOO SERVER! JUST BEFORE THE THUNDERDOME DEADLINE. Blame them all on Roundeye.

I figured you wouldn't like Deskmod. It's goal in life is to provide skins and programs for Desktop Modification. The closest thing to straight art they have (assuming you don't count the skins as art), is Wallpapers.

Pixel Attic is intended to be their pure art site when it opens though. We'll see how it turns out. Wether a DA or a sijun......

I know off:
DeviantArt
EatPoo
Sijun
ConceptArt
PixelAttic (when it opens)

What other community sites are there of interest?

drbang...hem..lets forgive you

others : well i know deviant since some months now, it has good points and weak points, like every community.
lots of artists there are among the bests.
my favorite is nuvem.deviantart.com .
the best thing for deviant is that its very well known, so more new talented unknown artists join. And the best for me is that there are a lot of different styles (traditional painting, digital painting, 3d, abstract, fotos , fotomanip , skins etc etc etc..).

i came to take a look here at sijun just because of craigmullins posts
btw there are a lot of great "painterlish" artists there, and i like to see different styles so i check the forum often.

another cool site is www.gfxartist.com .

if you like things more "traditionnal" and pro check www.epilogue.net.

the most important is to be able to see the artists you prefer, not all are posting in each community, so the best thing to do is to browse ...
