heyas, i've been learning oil painting this semester and i'm having a pretty good time with it. my instuctor started me off with a limited palette of yellow ochre, venetian red, and ultramarine blue. it's been a challenge working with such dull, earth-tone colors, and i feel i could easily spend a lot more time with this palette, but i'm really hankering to expand a little.

besides black and white, i'm thinking about adding a brighter red, yellow, and _possibly_ a blue (though i'm likely to stick with ultramarine). i'll be adding burnt sienna for sure. i don't know how useful it is but it's just too pretty to leave out .

your thoughts?

It is hard to expand one's palette without the resulting pictures losing coherency...I've just started to expand the colour range I am using myself.

This is my shopping list when I buy oil paint, though, if it can be of any help:

Burnt sienna
Burnt umber
Red oxide
Cadmium red dark
Cadmium yellow light
Phthalocyanine blue
Prussian blue
Green...hell, I've forgotten the name of it. It's that medium yellowish-looking green, anyway. Green earth, maybe? Green something.
Viridian
Titanium white

I don't bother buying black...waste of good $...I never use it anyway.

EDIT - I got out some oil paints to look up the name of that green. Winsor & Newton calls it olive green, but don't buy W&N paint...it's rubbish and everyone should get Grumbacher instead. I've got all these tubes of paint here which I'll NEVER use...faugh.

Try to learn all you can about creating solid value paintings and on brush work before you move on to wilder colors. My paint list is:
Cad Yellow Pale
Cad lemon yellow
Cad Scarlet
Alizarin Crimson
Cobalt blue light
Ultramarine blue deep
Terra Rosa
Ventetian Red
Yellow Ochre
Burt Umber
Burnt Sienna
Viridian
Titanium white

Those are colors that I own, I don't use them all in every painting. When your using that many colors you have to be much more selective and thoughtful because there are so many variables.
With that pallette you can do everything you could ever want, but you have to know what your doing.
Where are you taking classes by the way?

i'm a little worried about alizarin crimson, it's a wonderful color but kind of on the cool.. magenta-ish side. also, is having just one blue (ultramarine) enough?

duckman: im taking classes at a local college here. i've asked my teacher for advice but i'd like to hear other opinions .
