so what do you guy think of using custom brushes for textures? like the ones you download..
i just found some sites with "custom" brushes last night. Its usually the grungy waterspots stains kind of brushes. I think ive been missing out on these brushes :P
so would you use them on your paintings for effects such as blood stains, etc? im thinking its just best to paint it, but these brushes might come in handy once in a while like filters do. |

it'd be more fun to make your own brushes. you could stain a pice of paper or tissure or something, scan it in, grey scale it, and make it a brush. i think that would be more fun than using someone else's. course, it's probably easier just to use someone else's especially if they are giving them away for free. |

Just keep a bunch of grayscale photos of grunge, mud, and rust for selection map, and you're set. |

Well,
go here:
http://www.archive.org/texts/texts-details-db.php?collection=millionbooks&collection id=473
Download it (its free but laaaaaarge as PDF), import it into Photoshop and make your own "groovy" brushes... This art is public domain. The Archive.org however does have much more public domain art, use the search... Use "illustrations" and "public domain" as search terms.
Have fun

Try using traditional ink a paper. Dab some ink on paper with various brushes in various sizes, scan them into PS, eliminate the white and use the remaining black ink blot to define your custom brush with.
Very similar to what Jami suggested (now that I've read the whole thread).
Take it easy,
