Looking at Bengal's Batman and Catwoman pics got me thinking. What do people use to make textures? Do you take your own photos of fun textures, scan stuff in grey scale, find them on the web, hand paint them, or use filters?
I've used a combination of all of the above, but I was wondering if people had a prefered method here. |

That's an awesome idea, rendering the texture in a 3d program with bump and specular first to get a final texture. Simple, yet amazingly effective. |

I normally use free textures as well as own photos. Personally I prefer normal, scanned photos, no digitals (because of the color noise in digital photos)...
I combine them in Photoshop and draw in all the symbols and damages.
If the texture has to be seamless I use the displacement-Filter and draw over the visible edges until the texture looks nice.
Be warned: This can take quite a long time But it is worth every minute.
Most of the time I do not need a bump-map
This image has no bump-map: http://stud.fbi.fh-darmstadt.de/~albersta/02/test-text1.jpg
