Hi there.
Premiere should have some preset sizes to work with, try investigating it some more. It all depends on your tv network format. There are two main options, PAL and NTSC. America is NTSC, so Canada is likely to also be NTSC. I think Europe uses PAL television, in Australia (where I am) we also use PAL format.
Your options for NTSC are:
NTSC, 640*480
NTSC, 648*486
NTSC DV, 720*480
NTSC DV WIDESCREEN, 720*480
NTSC D1, 720*486
NTSC D1 SQUARE PIXELS, 720*540
NTSC DV >>> probably is NTSC DIGITAL VIDEO. D1 I have no idea what it means. Goto www.CGTALK.com
Cgtalk is a bunch of Digital visual FX forums. Find the relevant forum and you may get a better idea of which one you should use.
Oh yeah, don't forget to check that you get the right framerate aswell.
Hope that helps. |

Actually PALs native resolution is 768x576, that is of course not the resolution you would be painting at, that depends on what you're up to, but the resolution you resample/downsize to before rendering your video.
However, whether you use PAL or NTSC it is important to be aware that :
"most NTSC consumer television sets cut off some portion of the outer edges of the picture. This process, called overscan, permits the center of the picture to be enlarged. The amount of overscan is not consistent across all televisions, so it is best to keep titles within the title-safe zone and important subjects within the action-safe zone."
(Cut from Premieres help documents)
Do a search on the terms "Title-safe and Actions-safe" using your favorite search engine ... the numbers are different for each resolution ...
Action-safe zones for the following formats are :
Aspect Ratio & Format | Top Margin | Bottom Margin | Left Margin | Right Margin
4:3 NTSC-------------| --- 027 --- | ---- 507 ---- | --- 036 --- | --- 648 ---
16:9 NTSC------------| --- 027 --- | ---- 507 ---- | --- 048 --- | --- 912 ---
4:3 PAL---------------| --- 029 --- | ---- 547 ---- | --- 038 --- | --- 729 ---
16:9 PAL--------------| --- 029 --- | ---- 547 ---- | --- 051 --- | --- 972 ---
Title-safe zones for the following formats are :
Aspect Ratio & Format | Top Margin | Bottom Margin | Left Margin | Right Margin
4:3 NTSC-------------| --- 054 --- | ---- 480 ---- | --- 072 --- | --- 648 ---
16:9 NTSC------------| --- 054 --- | ---- 480 ---- | --- 096 --- | --- 864 ---
4:3 PAL---------------| --- 058 --- | ---- 518 ---- | --- 077 --- | --- 691 ---
16:9 PAL--------------| --- 058 --- | ---- 518 ---- | --- 102 --- | --- 621 ---
Download zipped Photoshop 7 templates here.
Another thing to keep in mind is pixel/screen aspect ratios and interlacing do a search on those too to get more details ... better safe than sorry ...
