Hey everyone I've been looking through some art websites lately but I just can't find them! I have a school project for a History class and I want to use some artwork as part of the visual part of the presentation I have setup.
Does anyone know of any artist that have drawn some of these gods??? |

WOuld anyone care to explain the story behind this image? I know it's a famous painting, but I don't know who the people are, what they represent, what the whole story line is. For me, the meaning of the artpiece is very important, that's what I have an interest in. Not the usual paintings that people draw nowdays, but the biblical stuff (even though I'm not religious) or mythological stuff. I love greek, italian, roman, catholic paintings, as well as greek/roman sculptures. They just call for my attention whenever I spot them in books and what not. Anyhoooooo, enough blabbing. Someone, please explain! |

i've heard a couple stories. this is one that i've heard more though.. the poet hesiod says that the name aphrodite came from the word aphros or foam, and that the goddess was made from foam.. he wrote that the titan kronos castrated his father ouranos, and then threw his balls into the sea.. foam gathered around his severed wang, and from it aphrodite emerged, fully formed. pretty crazy..
i think this picture is of venus actually, though, the story is similar. the figure on the shell is either venus or aphrodite, the angelic figures on the left is the wind god zephyrus and his female companion - zephyrus is blowing her to shore.. on the right, a female figure is giving her a robe - she is one of the hours (also known as the horae, or seasons, in greek mythology)
i learned all this from my humanities class last semester.. and i thought it'd never be of any use :D |
