For my design class at school we have been asked to reasearch why we would like to become industrial designers. So if any of you have time to answer my questions I would be very greatfull.

1: What does your work in design usually involve?

2: how competitive is the industry

3: are you comfterble with your pay rates

thanks in advance.

Guess I got some time and I'm bored

1: What does your work in design usually involve?

I work for an ad agency with a local car dealership as our main client. I do car ads mostly. Lots and lots of car ads. Mazda, Porsche, Jaguar, Audi, Saab...etc. I do some logo work, some actual design work, program ads (lots more fun than regular ads). Oh and paper work. It's not always fun being the low man on the pole. I really want to do illustration (which I never get to do at this job), so I've been looking at that field recently. Trying to figure out everything involved in freelancing. Yikes!

2: how competitive is the industry

Not sure yet. I got my job before finishing my 2-year degree. I'm working full-time and finishing up this Fall. I'll have that and 2-years experience under my belt. I'll have to get back to you at the end of the semester, when I see how the "new job"-hunt goes.

3: are you comfterble with your pay rates

For my position and level of experience and qualifications, its as good as its going to get. Much better than being paid nothing or part-time though. Although, I understand that the pay-rates for experienced artists in my region are very comfortable. My Art Director and the other Senior Graphic Designer seem pretty well off in anycase.

My job is a kind of "you don't have any experience but you know how to use the equipment" sort of job. I've gain a great deal of experience in just 2 years though and feel its about time to move on. I'm looking now, though I probably won't have much luck until I actually graduate. On the otherhand, if you're just looking to get started, most Art Directors recognized a skilled artist with potential and figure you'll get better as you gain experience.

later,
Brian
