hi dhabih

(just my 1st post on this forum *g)

do you have server stats of this site so you can say how much traffic is produced? just want to see if a dedicated server is too much for it

i think the best way to get it sponsored is asking some painting/digitalart-equipment producers like wacom, adobe or some studios that have their own server.. if its not that much of data each month they will maybe want to support it

(someone working at a such a place? *g)

hope you'll find a good solution!

Hm...im not sure how much...i actually dont think its that huge though....especially since attendance here has gone down a bit lately i think i get maybe 5000 hits a day (thats a wild guess...im probably way off) ...things may pick up again though so i dunno. Good idea about asking a big sponsor like that. i'll check it.

sure.
if you calculate that a (slow) dsl connection can handle 512kbit, than you get something like 150gb transfer volume (max.) per month; but looking at the board that contains nearly pure text-transfers with the server (cause all icons are cached by the browser) it is not that much..
maybe 8gb.. or 10
(hehe - someone else joining the bet? *g)

edit: oh sorry, dhabih was to fast for my in-brain-translation from german to english i think =)

Yeah the only thing I can think of is getting it sponsored by someone, otherwise all free hosting has adds, and far far far from unlimited transfere and the likes.
If you want unlimeted stuff, its gonna cost I'm afraid, unless anyone knows anything else.

obviously as a fallback you could just have donations possibly. I think 8000 people could fork over enough to keep things going.

Dhabih,

I'll do it. And for a little smidg of ad space? Good deal for me.

I'm on a T1 and you would have no bandwidth cap.

Dhab...

Whatever you do, go with a real hosting place, don't try and get a free ride somewhere. (No offense, bucket...)

You're better off setting up with a stranger who is a real host. For the same resons you don't do business with your family, you know? It's easier to yell at someone if something goes wrong and they're not a friend.

Blind,

No offense taken. I do run a hosting company. I am a stranger and I am not family. So, I guess I'm still qualified.

visit: PixelTwisters.com to see the pricing chart.

Bucket... looks like a pretty good deal you have running there. If you don't mind me asking, what provider are you with? Is it someone with good peering agreements? I'm just curious for my own interests.

I have several 10/100 switched ports off of a multi T1 backbone with bandwidth provided by Level 3 and purchased through Nethere. Using a Cisco 2600 Router/CSU-DSU. And Cisco 1900 Switches.

The target server for Sijun is running:
FreeBSD 4.6-STABLE
CPU: 2 Pentium III 850 MHz
Apache/1.3.24 (Unix) PHP/3.0.18 PHP/4.2.0
MySql 3.23.49
Soon to have it's own SSL certificate.

I'm quite proud of my little servers. We're a small hosting company, about 1 year old. Just me and 2 other people. We currently only host around 26 sites and have lot's of bandwidth left to use.

Blind, I see you are a web developer? Can I see some of your samples? I am looking for a web developer. Here is the position description. http://www.pixeltwisters.com/jobs.html

Regards.

I may need to finally after 5 years move the servers to a real hosting place. My friends DSL cant really handle it much more and he's actually downgrading the line so things will just be WAY too slow. Anyone know where i can host for free or real cheap with no limits? heh. a POWERED BY button can be there, buti dont want any kind of crazy advertising. I dunno....i'm just seeing what my options are at this point.

Frost whispers "Yearly subscribtions of 20$-50$? It's not that expensive considering it's for an entire year. (you can't rely on donations)"

Bucket: The job looks interesting, but I'm a) nowhere near Thousand Oaks and b) very expensive I've been lucky enough to land a fulltime job doing what I do for a huge company, plus the side jobs I do for fun put me well into the range where I'd be stupid to make a move for less than way too much. But, that job does sound like something you shouldn't have a problem filling. That's the kind of thing I would have jumped at a few years back.

you can go to 1T3 they offer basically everything without limitation and they're about 40$ a year....but the catch is is that you have to buy the domain name through them to get the free hosting...but another one mostly all my friends use is irev this one is only 5$/month and has domain fowarding as well but only has like 1gb a month traffic...hope this helps!

I've just been going over http://www.1t3.com/... It sure seems like a good deal. Free unlimited space and bandwidth hosting if you buy or transfer a domain name from or to them. $40.00 a year if you already have a domain name and want to keep it where it is. Sounds like the new location for Sijun.

Anyone have any experience with 1T3? I'm going to get an account... having a hard time believing it's for real...

You can also try http://www.affordablehost.com
excellent webhosting site.
My counter-strike clans webpage is hosted there. We use Ikonboard instead of UBB.

For what it's worth, I can vouch for Bucket (or is it Monkey?).

He's hosted me for close to two years and he hosts game artists from several companies such as Paradox, Verant, Presto, Gearbox, etc..

well scratch what i just said, 1T3 is now up to 74.99$/year. See what i said...the price is going up fast!!!!!!! and probably making all existing accounts go up too....so you might want to really think about this before you actually buy an account with them! because what might seem to good to be true probably is....

plastikman... $74.99/year???? I just bought an account yesterday for 39 bucks, using one of my own domain names... Well this morning the same price page is at $59.99/year... Whoever's running it is having fun with his spreadsheet...

BTW, the text under that $74.99/year price still offers free hosting when you buy your domain name through them... Bit confusing...

Bucketmoney: Hey, if a deal is struck, I'd love it if you put up a banner saying "discount for Sijun-members!"...

I'm willing to donate something to keep the boards up. 'tis fair, afterall.

I'm all for donations and I would donate, but I really feel if any donations are made they should be made privatly.
This is because others shouldn't be preassured or intimadadted into donatting nor should stupid people be allowed to brag about planning to donate tons of money. Some people have money to give and some don't and turning sijun into a charity isn't a great idea from my point of view.

Just to clarify what I said, donate privatly if you sincerely wish to do so.
