Am I the only one who doesn't like Ps7?
I eally would like to go back to Ps 5.5 but

I remember one man at my last work, he had developed such a good workflow in a program so he wouldn't change to a newer version, I looked at him and thought "man this guy will miss loads of stuff by continue working with that old program"
Now I'm in the same position as he, I want to upgrade myself but also I would like to stay with good old PS5...

What do you guys think? stay or not?

Move on... but keep your old version on your hard drive. At least on a PC they can both live there harmoniously... you just can't run them both at the same time.

All PS5.5 & 6 files can be opened using PS7 and PS7 files can be opened (I believe) using PS5.5 or 6 -- you just lose some of the vector stuff that you might have done with PS7... and perhaps some other stuff (did 5.5 have layer sets? I forget), but all in all I'd say buy the upgrade and slowly get into it...

(BTW - I'm curious - is it legal to run two versions of PShop on the same computer or is that a license violation - I don't think so since you can not run them at the same time.)

As far as I know, it's perfectly legal, provided you've paid for both versions, or if you have a yearly multi-user license, that license hasn't expired. I always thought it was a good idea to keep an older version of the software on just in case.

And, at least on a Mac, you can run different versions at the same time. I do it all the time for Illustrator 8 & 9, and did it for Photoshop 5.5 and 6. Actually, I've had multiple copies of the same version open as well (though one resides on my internal hd, and one is on my firewire hd).

And, in my opinion...i don't like photoshop 7, and have no plans to upgrade at home. (I used 7 at the web design company I used to work for).

Blarr, never mind--just use what you're comfortable with. That's all I really meant.

with any major application or OS, my personal rule is always to wait it out a bit. That's why I'm still on Win2K and not XP. I'll let them work the kinks out and put out a few service packs before upgrading. Same goes for PS6. I waited almost until PS7 was out before jumping from 5.5 to 6. 8 will probably be a few months down the road when I get 7 >8)

ugh. I hate PS7! The new layout/brushwindow shit is pooey. I only use it at work for texture stuff.

Whenever I paint I use PS 5. (or painter).

but yeah go with whatever. But of course it'll be harder to adapt to Photoshop 10, if you've only used 5, but who really cares, if all you do is paint, then all you need is the paintbrush and not all the other gimmicks..

ahahah, like if you had xp, you'd be laughing right now. They (microsoft) has released AT LEAST 20 "vital security update" and probably about 30 patches in total, and they're still coming, I got one just a couple days ago.

It completley mystifies me when people get so upset about every new version of Photoshop

I started with 2.5, back in 1994, and have gone with every upgrade since gratefully. You just have to get used to the small interface changes, they take at most a week of working in the new app to get used to. Serriously, there is nothing you can do more quickly or better in PS 5.5 than you can in 7, you may have to learn how to do it a little differently but you won't be doing it any slower or less effectively once you learn how to use the new tools.

As for the brush engine, how can you criticise it without having used it? You can still use the exact same brushes you had in previous versions, and create or use a host of others. You just have more tools at your disposal, as well as all the old ones. Every argument I've heard about 5.5 being better than 7 always boils down to the fact that those criticising the new version haven't learned how to use it properly yet.

And if people don't like the web functionality that Adobe include (a very common complaint), just ignore it!!!

It's foolish to stay with a previous version just because you're stuck in the mud, believe me one day you will have to upgrade, whether it's now or two versions down the line and on that day you will get caught out for being stubborn and stuck in your ways...

Man, Frog, that's pretty harsh.

Anyway, I didn't say I haven't used PS7--I have, in fact. I just haven't bought it yet. However, it IS quite expensive, and I wasn't overly impressed by the interface or the brush engine. I don't really see the harm in staying with v.6 for now and seeing what v.8 (or 7.x, for that matter) has to offer.

I'd rather use software I'm comfortable with, and which does exactly what I need it to do, than upgrade just because everybody else is doing it.

EDIT - I just realized that it sounded like I might have tried a "warez" version of PS7--I didn't...I tried out a version installed on a friend's computer.

I was initially put off by the new brush engine as well... and thought about not upgrading. In hindsight, I see that I just didn't understand it well. The PS6 and earlier brush engines were definitely easier to use, but the new capabilities in PS7 are definitely worth learning about and becoming comfortable with.

I think there are some improvements to be made on it and I'm sure Adobe knows about most of them.

My pet peeve about the new engine is the inability to modify an existing brush without having to save the modifications to a new brush. Is there a way to change an existing brush without saving it to a new brush? Anyone?

Also, The brush palette should have a brush sets capability, something like layer sets.

And finally it should be much easier to move brushes around on the brush palette, also something like being able to easily drag and drop layers into new positions.

It'll get better, but to my mind it's well worth the effort now.

Hey Socar, my rant wasn't directed at you personally

It wasn't really directed at anyone in particular. I was just pointing out that people complain at every new version of PS, but really once you get used to the new workflow you will find that the new version almost always works better than the old

I didn't mean to offend you, or anyone else, I am just a big Photoshop fan and felt that the tide of moaning needed a dissenting voice!!

[edit] Eyewoo: I use the preset manager to store my brushes and their settings. I've also created an action set that amongst many other things calls up some of my favourite customised brushes (paintbrushes, airbrushes, custom pencils, custom markers etc) with a keypress. Once you have such an action linked to a key you can easily call your brushes from your Wacom pop-up menu or your tablet buttons too.
