Are there benefits to actually drawing fast (like under deadlines?) I always have to stop and think of the science of things, once I have a form. Like the lighting, colors...takes me a while to get it down right. I guess the more I practice, the more it'll come as a reflex

Yes there is some benefit to drawing/painting fast. Sometimes having a deadline streamlines your thinking process. It forces you to simplify. It doesn't mean you think less, in fact it is mostly the opposite. Getting things right the first time becomes very important because you don't have time to rework everything later until it looks right. I think speed painting is just as educational as taking the time to think about everything when you paint. But speed painting really forces you to put into practice all the observations you made when taking your time, they kind of go hand and hand.
I'm sure others may have differnt observations but those are mine. |

You should try to complete alot of images, even if it means simplifying. That way you get good at the beginning stages of a picture. |

Yeah, I understand. When I was young, I was learning how to write in script and the teacher made us write as many sentences as possible in 10mins, then 5mins.
Now I'm complimented on my handwriting I get it. I guess I'm not at the stage where I can draw what I want fast. I'm good at monotones, I just have problems with coloring and texturing. Also, since PhotoShop has that bland brush (I don't understand how to make a custom brush that I want.)
Here's what I did around 30mins.
