Hey who would have thought Painter actually have a really cool user interface feature : when you have your picture window maximized, and the picture size is reduced, you can 'pan' the picture around on the screen. So you can fit it between your palettes. This allows you for example to zoom in on an edge of your picture, but have it right in the middle of the screen where you can have a good look at it.

How do you do that in Photoshop? After I press the F key, I have the picture centered on the screen and stuck there.

How do you work on the edges of the picture ?
I find that the window edges from Windows' GUI are disturbing me to see clearly what I have on the edges of my pic, plus I want to see how the pic looks like on a plain surrounding grey or black as the F key does.

Suggestions ?

Space bar pans the image methinks.

I think that in this respect at least, Painter has one over on PS.

Once you hit F in PS, the image is locked to the centre, and the very edges are inaccessible.

I dont know a way to shrink the working area after pressing F if thats what you want, but you can fade out the paletes using Tab, or Shift-Tab to keep the Toolbar. For Panning you press Space so you get the hand tool. And there is a way to fill the Grey or Black area with the paint bucket, but I dont remember right now.

I think you can get a 6 side shorcut overview at the Adobe homepage. If not tell me, Ill send you one.

I know Space bar Pans the image. But only if the window is not maximized. If the window is maximized, in fact, if the picture is viewn at 100% size in a window, maximized or not, you can not Pan the picture to show up the empty space around the picture.

Let's say the image is the artboard and the grey surrounding area is the desk. In Painter you can pan the artboard over the desk, so you can focus on one corner of the picture at the center of the screen.

So far one solution is to extend the canvas, and to reduce it when the artwork is finished. Looking at the artwork in a window sometimes make it look 'cramped'.

Yup, that's what I was referring to in my first reply up there. Easy workaround, especially if you are using multiple monitors is to maximise your document (on one monitor only) rather than hitting the F key, achieves the same result but you can get to the edges

I quite like Painters rotate canvas thingamajig too ... it's great when crosshatching or when drawing curves like eyes or foilage and stuff like that ... does anyone have any other cool particular uses for this feature that I (and maybe others) never realized ??? Just wondering ...

The worst thing about PS is a bug on PC. If you "F"-maximize the image (like everyone with two monitors would) and zoom into the image till there is no more "grey" around it, the lower 20 or 30 pixels are not accessible!

Try it! Hit Space and pan to the lower border, do some strokes or some a lasso which hits (should hit) the border. Zoom out and be surprised. This bug hunts me since version 4.
Sometimes adobe really sucks.

WOAH! I'm not the only one experiencing that DAMN BUG!... Actually let me tell my story well in short yes i experienced that weird edge bug where i cant draw or move selections or even select the edges... i sometimes suceed by using alt (is it?) bleh something i dont use too often (its moving selections without grid snap .. or something hehe i am not a ubber user just normal user) hmm another ANOYING bug i dun get it.. erm when i make a selection and then paint inside selection or use fill bucket there is stuff that goes out of the selection 2#(*(*@# i had so much damn trouble drawing a sprite with a pink background (transparent old trick in old games such as duke3d). Errr... #*@ I forget WHAT i did i think i .. yes i used a point 1 brush and then painted with pink ALL AROUND THE IMAGE! IT WAS A PAIN IN THE ASS :X first i spent a while selecting then tryed flood filling but all i got was 'slightly' pink edges *@(# and then that was BAD in game... hmm anywho i sorta skimmed through what everyone wrote and i dunno if it was mentioned but when u press f 3 times u go fullscreen yes but if u press tab all the menus/etc... disapear so u get a full image... the thing is u cant move the edge of the image to the center, the edge sticks to .. the edge of the screen heh.. Just my short rant, i got enticed to post when i saw the mention of that #(@(*@# bug

Just add an extra border to the edge of your image when working in PS.

That way you give yourself a bit of room so you can do that panning you wanted. Also to fill the default grey colour of photoshops background you use the paintbucket tool, shift or alt clicking with it... I think.

Ian,

I too at some point was wondering how to fill photoshops grey background to black. You say tha shift or alt and clicking with the paint bucket or anycombination of those should work. It doesn't look like thats it. Anyways It would really be awsome if you could remember how to do it and let us know! That would be something!

It's helpful to have that extra border all the way around an image. It makes for much easier working at the edges without worrying about kicking off the scroll bars or pulling in a guide line when rulers are active. Use a top layer to create a border completely around the working area.
