Maya Personal Learning Edition, also known as 'PLE'. It is a free version of Maya I assume can be downloaded on the web, I found it on a CD with a magazine.
From what I understand it IS the full version but it is ridden with 'watermarks', including on the viewports, and not the discrete watermarks mind you.. that put me down somewhat.
I'd like to hear thoughts of people using PLE?
Also which gfxcard were you using, any problems with OpenGL?
Thanks |

I'm learning on the PLE edition. Using OpenGL, with a 128meg Radeon 8500. The view port water-mark is a pain in the ass, but you get use to it.
I wish they wouldn't do that (View port water-mark.), I'm sure there are ways around such an issue. Discreet's free 3D Studio Max (Called G-Max.) doesn't do the constant water-marking in the view ports...
Ahh well... It's fine for learning though. Very nice tutorials. |

Isn't GMax massively cut down though? I thought it was just for low-poly modelling for games etc, with no high power tools or rendering.
As for Maya PLE...yeah, the watermarking is a PITA, and it was a bit of a surprise to find how obtrusive it was. It's nice to have an entire featureset, however. IIRC, SoftImage's trial version doesn't allow you to save, which is a pain as that won't give you much chance to see what it's like on complex projects. |

Well the viewport water mark makes sense, because it's so easy to just take a screen shot of your work, if you didn't have the ablility to save. |

You realise that Maya is a 3D modelling package, right? Just taking a screenshot of your model wouldn't get you very far. ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |
