I use Painter Classic, and Open Canvas and also Photoshop. And I'm wondering if Painter 7 has layers. And why doesn't Corel put some in Painter Classic? |

Painter 7 has layers. And painter classic doesn't have layers because it's a cheap software designated only to make people want to buy painter 7. |

Hi,
As mentioned in the previous post, Painter 7 has Layers, several kinds:
Default Layers
Water Color Layers
Liquid Ink Layers
Dynamic Plugin Layers (several different kinds)
Text Layers
Reference Layers (temporary during some processes)
...also items that are layered above the Canvas:
Shapes
Text Shapes
... not visible or displayed in the Layers list, but can be toggled off and on:
Impasto Layer
Those are the ones that come to mind at the moment and are most of them at least.
Painter Classic was based on Painter 5 which is three versions back (Painter 5, Painter 5.5, Painter 6, now Painter 7). It's been bundled with other products for a while now, currently with the Wacom tablets and it's an excellent introduction to Painter, even if it's quite limited in what it can do.
Painter 5 (on which Painter Classic is based) had Floaters and Transparent Layers, but not until Painter 6 did we have Layers.
In Painter Classic, you can make a single Floater by drawing a selection with the Lasso tool and clicking inside the selection using the Adjuster tool (black arrow icon). As long as the Adjuster tool remains active it can be used to move the Floater to a new position. Once another tool is chosen, or another action taken, the Floater drops immediately to the Canvas and can't be moved again.
In other words, the single Floater in Painter Classic is pretty useless.
Full Painter versions have had either Floaters (Painter 4 and earlier), Floaters and Transparent Layers (Painter 5 and 5.5), Layers (Painter 6), or the Layer types and other items that are layered above the Canvas listed above for Painter 7.
Prior to Painter 7, Water Color painting was done on the invisible Wet Layer associated with the Canvas, which is how it's done in Painter Classic as well. In Painter 5 and 5.5 Impasto painting was done on the Impasto Plugin Floater. Beginning with Painter 6, Impasto painting could be done either on the Canvas or on a Layer and the invisible Impasto Layer could be toggled off and on.
There's more to say about Layers in Painter, but that should give you a rough idea of how much more is available in full Painter versions (and I'm not even mentioning all the other features and brushes).
Painter Classic is a great way to get people interested in full Painter and it has very good capabilities. Some of its brushes are still favorites of long time Painter users and they can be used in later versions with the exception of Water Color brushes that don't work the same with Painter 7's new Water Color technology.
Get yourself Painter 7 and you'll be in heaven! It's so full of wonderful things to play with and such great tools for drawing and painting. |

It is possibile in Painter Classic to trace over a sketch using the clone/tracing paper functions. That's one use of layers that can be done in Classic. |
