You can get free web sites at places like geocities.com (there are dozens of similar services), but they all add automatic advertisments.
If you dont want the ads you need to pay. I'd seen places as low as $4 per month but they get up to like $25 per month for the expensive ones. |

A good place to start would be at one of the Domain Name suppliers like http://www.register.com . Once you've purchased a Domain Name then you need to point it to something called an IP address at an ISP of your choice. There is a website call http://www.thelist.com which lists just about all the ISPs around...
However, I think some of the Domain Name suppliers like Register.com also offer server space and website design help...
Its all a bit confusing the first time through... but I hope this has helped a bit...

You should check out whether your ISP, your internet provider, offers any website hosting at their place. I, for example, get a 20mb website space with my ISP. |

As noted by othersm you can get it at any price from free, on up. If you go with a free site, you will have to accept banner adds and/or pop-ups. Test others sites from those providers, to see which are less annoying, if you go that way.
I decided to get my own domain name, as they are not that expensive, and go ahead and get a site without ads, which does cost, but not bad. Specifically, I registered my domain thru buydomains.com, at $32 for two years, and I pay Earthlink $10 a month for my site. This now includes about 100 mb of space. If you have an earthlink account, you get a small website of about 5MB, which will give you several pages to display art, and may be just fine for many. For an site to display my work, I have no need for fancy features, shoppinmg carts, etc, and I'm not paying extra for these. I'm also not a web designer, so I focus on a site that is easy to maintain and update, and I use a near idiot-proof app to help me do it. In this case I use Adobe's Go Live. |
