I am sick of my current website and it is time for a new one. I have been thinking forever about how I should make it. I have made a color scheme and I know what fonts I am going to use but I am completely blank for ideas on the layout . How did you decide on the layout for your site? Could anyone give me some advice on how I can go about designing my site and how to choose what goes where and whatnot? I want to make something completely original that doesn't look like the same old thing I see all day. Thanks in advance.
My current site is here by the way.

Just read the most important dos and don'ts! If you actually pay heed to what is said there your site will stand out eventually!
I found that it's what people appreciate most...
...besides the content (of course) if art is what the page is about!
Layout wise I personally like pages that stick to the most common design ideas.
You don't have to be that resourceful in that respect I guess! |

hmm, a nice and easy way to navigate, thats what i went for, not incredibly flashy i know, but i does the job. force yourself to sit down for a few hours and just think about what the damn bugger should look like, youre bound to come out with someting interesting |

That javascript thing sounds good. Where can I find some script or tutorials on how to write some basic gallery handling stuff? quote: 2) - Make it very simple to maintain - to add new artwork and remove old artwork.
-I agree! I need to remember that.
I just got offered a little web design job from my dad for the company he is a part of. At least now I will have someone to make me actually finish my site. ![](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) |

When I designed my last site - after several previous sites - I had two things chiefly in mind...
1) - The site is to show off my artwork, not my website design.
2) - Make it very simple to maintain - to add new artwork and remove old artwork.
To satisfy the first, I decided on a simple left side navigation with full right side content (thumbnails and picture displays)
To satisfy the second, I used a single included javascript file to control the entire site... so that adding a new picture is simply a matter of adding one line of code to the file. Removing a picture entails removing the picture's code line. (I'd recommend getting into Javascript if you haven't already)
oh yeah, and there was a third thing ... stay away from Flash ... ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |
