Use a harder brush.. or you could try using the lasso tool to get very solid areas of color. Right now, it looks like you're having trouble laying down definite chunks of chroma. |

That pic was an experiment with an airbrush I did today hence the blurriness but a lot of my work is like that, I've been told to try to work with just three block colours of highlight, shadows and midtone before and I've got a couple of sketchbooks with the stuff... I need more practice in the end :-)
An attempt to do what you suggested is posted on my webpage:

sort of became cartoon like... |

I think Impaler is right about using a harder brush. Right now it looks to bland and lack the texture it needs to help the eye going with the atmosphere.
I fell for the airbrush as well(roundbrush) but soon found out that you can achieve a much better results by using low opacity hard brush(about 30%)
And I see that you use the magic wand tool. it shows.. actually in the edges where the jaggies can be seen( I know I went through the same phase) Don't worry about the lines that much. You can always paint them in again or undo the mistakes you've made(hey, it's photoshop!) And that's what Layers are for.
Focus on the complete picture rather then little details will get you farther than you think.
Hope this helps. |

Thanks for the advice, I always end up with about fifty saves of each image I'm working on as well...
I'll give it a shot tonight without the wand - love your work btw :-) |

another sketch, I might actually start an image tonight I figured out a lot of new stuff, and I don't like the sketch lines so I've stopped work on this one... I'll try my hand at an actual big piece now :-)
