I have recently started dabbling with using 3D models in my 2D digital painted work. I basically create 3D models, render the models as images using the 3DS Max scanline renderer, and then finally paint over the images using them as a guide. A friend told me there are renderers and plugins that may speed my process by rendering the images with a simulated painted look that I could work easier from. Any suggestions on how to achieve a 'painted' look in 3DS Max would be appreciated.

some non-realistic shaders/renderers for max:
illustrate, vecta3d, swift3d, piranhese, comic shop...it's also possible to achieve a cel-shader by tweaking the output gradient of the standard blinn shader.

I dont consider using a 3D model as a base for a painting "cheating" in anyway, as long as its mentioned how you did it. Im just saying this because I can imagine you getting a lot of negative feed back on this.. maybe not.
Blacksad very nice. I dont have much 3D experience but I can imagine it would be very hard to get these types of effects.

Wouldnt it be so cool if a similar filter was used throughout a whole feature length film! Or would it ? I cant imagine it being done ever.

the film 'Waking Life' is pretty similar.. i think they had different artists do parts of the film so its not the same throughout.. but it has that painted look.. i have yet to see the movie..
the trailer looks pretty cool
