When you say clean lines, I suspect you meen the outline, and not the shading?
If I draw toonstyle i usually draw my sketch on paper scan it, and redraw the lines on my computer ind High resolution (usually about 3000*3000 or like wise).
I do this because my drawings is usually used for prints, and because it makes the shaking of my hand far less. And Thus, I get clean outlines.
The colours I afterwords draw on layers below
It's a slow technique but I like the results
I've used it for for instance http://www.simplearts.org/draw/Nosuch.jpg

If you are having trouble with drawing on the slippery surface of the Wacom, you could try putting a piece of paper down on it. A lot of ppl say that this gives them a very similar touch to using pencil on paper. Be aware that this does actually wear down the nib a little bit more, but as far as I know it isn't much of a problem at all.
Also try drawing larger lines from the elbow, not the wrist. This basically means you should not keep your elbow stuck to the desk while drawing, because you need it for better / fluid movement.
Other tips: These are part of my upcoming website. I'll be adding more tips like these, and using them to save typing again and again here at the forum.
Straight Lines:
To draw perfectly straight lines with any of the brush tools, simply make a mark at your starting point, then hold down shift and make the end mark of the line. Photoshop will draw a straight line between these points with whichever brush you have selected. To continue drawing more connecting straight lines just press shift again.
Accurate shapes:
To draw a shape with straight lines and sharp corners, like a triangle for example, just make a selection with the Polygonal Lasso tool, set to point by point mode. Then paint in the selection. Other shapes with curves can be done using the pen tool. Draw your shape with the pen tool. You can move the bezier handles around to create a smooth curve if you like. Goto the Paths pallete when you have your shape. Hold down ctrl, and left click on the path in the paths pallete. This will load a selection of that path shape, which you can use to paint within.
Hope that helps. |
