Frankly, it took me about three days to get used to the trick of looking at the screen, and drawing on the tablet, back in '94. Since then, it has never been an issue. So much so, that even if the Cintiq were cheap, I believe I actually prefer the plain pad over drawing over the image. I'm sure there are numerous applications where the Cintiq is a must, but for me it isn't an issue.

Sooner or later, we'll all be drawing on our screens, no doubt.

But for now, I'm with Tom Luth. Adjusting to a regular Wacom tablet isn't that difficult. The price of a Cintiq is just too prohibitive. When the price gets down to a little more than a regular monitor, people will be snatching them up.

As for me, I can just see myself getting schmutz, fingerprints and dirt all over the screen of a Cintiq.

I've got a Cintiq 15x and I swear by it.
I should qualify that by mentioning that I've bn a Wacom tablet user since 95. I had a love/hate relationship with the early tablets, and for a year or so my 12*12 Intuous was used strictly as a mouse pad. Once I got the hang of drawing and looking in different places, then it was a sinch. But it took me a hell of a lot longer than 3 days.

For a while, I've been doing a lot of layout type drawings (using the tablet). Freehand drawing anything that requires precise linework or perspective on the Intuous is an excercise in pain for me - literally. I practically gave myself arthritis and tendonitis in my pinkie and middle finger from control-Z-ing all my wonky lines. With the Cintiq, it's not an issue. I turn the tablet on the table to slash out a straight line like I would on paper.

Anyhow, a low-ish screen res and LCD color funkiness aren't enough to scare me off.

Speaking of which, the gizmo that's got me most hyped right now are the upcoming tablet PC's. If the spec's I've read online are accurate, it's essentially a Cintiq with a laptop in it, and a four hour batery life. Woohoo! Outdoor digital painting at last!

cheers
YV

I am indeed.

They're getting cheaper. The Cintiq's predecessor was called the PL500 (I think). It had less resolution, half the pressure senstitivity and cost twice as much. Not a bad upgrade if you asked me.

In Canada, it cost me about 1.5k more than buying a big CRT and a 12*12 IntuousII, so I just saved my beans for a bit longer. I also found a company here that sent me a demo unit to try for a week before I shelled out. Damn nice of them.

Classic catch 22 though. The price isn't going to drop until more people start buying. But most people are waiting for the price to drop... etc etc.
