I've had my wacom intuous 6x8 for nearly a 11months now and well, done shite all with it... Nows the time and i have no idea wot to do for sketching in Photoshop

I dont want to draw pics and scan them in then colour, although i can. I want to be able to sketch photoshop then paint over... What tool do i use to sketch, the airbrush, paintbrush, pencil tool?

If any1 has some time, it would be helpful if you guys could do a screenshot of yur photoshop tools u use, like sizes and type etc.

Thanks guys

i think you need more practise in real sketching.
Forget the tools...you can sketch with everything. Pen,brush,...even palette knife.
Just be loose and learn how to see/record, not how to move your hand to create perfect lines.

i use always just the regular size 19 brush for sketching. Sometimes I have ocapacity stylus on, sometimes I don't. Just the size stylus. But yea, you can sketch with any tool. It doesn't really matter, as long as it can do lines when you draw.

i think you should just practice hand to eye coordination with the tablet to get the sketching to go smooth. the sketch doesn't have to be anything splendid.

Just in case you care this is how my sketches usually look like, with the normal paintbrush and size set to stylus:

but, well, some people even start sketching the shape just by putting the base colours down, and then start refining the shape from that.

(oh and in case you want to compare the sketch to the final work, here's the url: http://www.asurfael.net/art/cgs/llamas02.jpg even if the final drawing is really sketchy too)

Edit: By the way, both the sketch and the drawing are done using the same tablet you're using. I've had it for almost 2 weeks now

I don't normally spend a lot of time trying to simulate traditional media when I'm digitally painting, but for sketching... I do like to try and simulate pencils. The best way I've found to do that (in Photoshop) is to use the brush or pencil tool set to about 50% and in multiply mode. Strokes then become more intense in color as they pass over previous stokes, which is pretty much the way a pencil works.

Fine tipped airbrush, fathered, set to an opacity of 50-70%.
Normal mode, brush options set to stylus on size and opacity.
