My opinion... definitely a repro and probably using a tracing technique...
Check out the flowers on the right in ther above gif animation... |

the flowers (on the piano and to the right) are pretty much the ONLY things that change ever so slightly in the pic... the rest could have been done with brightness/contrast, unsharp masks, hue saturation and all those tools... |

Sometimes artists would paint copies to send to simultaneous exhibitions. I have seen two versions of Church's Cotopaxi. Bouguereau would do this, I remember some other artists being sickened at the commercial pandering of the practice, but I think it was pretty common. I have no idea if this is what happened here, but it seems the simplest explanation. A forger would do a better job! I mean, follow the original more closely... |

Interesting... the second one is the version I've seen at the boston show.

My question would be:
If both were by Sargent, then why is one of them so much more aged than the other? Or, only one of them was restored, while the other wasn't? Maybe by now, both have been restored.
Arghh.... the mysterious world of art. |

Yeah... I think spooge has it nailed... It would be interesting to know which was painted first. |
