I've written a small article on some methods I've discovered/developed to draw/paint from my imagination.
The process is generally appliable to many other disciplines but is especially useful to the artist who desire to work without reference or copy.
The "basic" idea behind the system is to reduce the reactionary processes of drawing (ie. drawing from reactions to the canvas) and instead work from the imagination.
The system is all about visualizing and creativity. It does not suppose or support any method or any actual technique of working over any other.
One could work using the cylinder/cube/box approach, gestures, or line contours (or even 3d). The method is basically about using the imagination to guide the painting process.
My own results so far has been a big increase in the creativity of my sketches. The quality is only marginally improved from using these techniques.
However, I feel these techniques are extremely invaluable for the serious artist (who desire to work without copy/reference and have not gained much results from the traditional approaches alone).
But.. try it out and see what you think.

hmm, quite interesting reading.
I thought this was gonna be really cheesy, and philosophical. It is sort of, but thats just because with a topic like this you have to use superflous words.
It makes sense though. I have been doing it already, and I can recall one particular image I formed in my mind. I want to make this image oneday, but never realised that my visualization skills should be put to more use, and stretched further in order to create it. I mean, instead of visualizing then picking up my pencil and wavering off to the real world of "where the heck to I place the mark?", I should now actively try and integrate more of an explorative approach, freer and not so out of context barriers like "I can't draw that..". It's so obvious its not funny. Sounds really crazy and philosophical, but its a fantastic state of mind if I can get it to work.
Thx for that, I found it to be really quite interesting. It's usually a very personal thing, dreaming and inmagination. I spose thats why reading it is so interesting, becuase its like putting it into words for the first time, and 'everyone does it'. Thats quite personal really, because you think your own mind and creativity is something overactive and untamed. It's like when your having a conversation with someone, and you don't even have to say much for a much more complex dialogue. You know they know, and you know they know, you know. (bleh! I hope you got that)
Interesting stuff. |
