Kipou- I'm udecided as of right now. I'm trying to choose between painting and illustration. Its the only school I applied to, mostly because I liked the facilities, and the weather is pretty sweet during the winter. The teachers are pretty good to, they really seem interested in the individual student. Of course for pure technique you can't beat a place like the Art Students League in NYC. You can't get a degree from them though and that little peice of paper counts for alot.
As far as future careers I don't know yet, first and foremost I want to master my mediums then go from there. I'd be a portrait painter, if your good you can live very well. Of course you run the risk of burning out, I wonder about idividuals who want to be painted, they think they are that important?
In my visitations to all the other art schools like MICA and RISD I felt this overriding sense of egotism and snobbery that really turned me off, they thought they were really hot shit when in reality the stuff that the students in those schools are producing is about the same quality as any other art school. Plus its going to be really nice to get out of the Northeast for a few years and see something different.

and I got a link to this board. I felt compelled to join in order to reply to this post (and prob display my work, participate in general discussions, etc in the future)

Well, I go to the Savannah College of Art and Design (or SCAD, as we call it)

Scad is well known around the united states... it has state of the art equipment (most of it which is kept for grads only) and a pretty dedicated fine arts staff.
I would like to point out, though, that the computer arts department is technically minded. As some of you might expect, classes are generally software focused rather than content focused. You take an animation class... and they will focus on teaching you the mechanics of animating in Maya... not animation itself. (The fine arts department is great though).
I recommend the computer department of scad only to those of you that are already very confident as far as your traditional arts skills (drawing, painting, sculpting, traditional 2d animation) are concerned. You will get a glimpse of fine arts for prob your first year here, during the foundations classes. Note, not all professors are good, in most colleges... and this is not an exception. I have had ok professors, a few exceptional ones... and some really careless ones.

One thing I might add- You will probably not get to touch a computer (as far as art is concerned) for your first 2 years here... which I found pretty disappointing. I'm an international student.. and in the countries I've lived in, so far, college itself was an institution that provided more specialized courses, etc.. and I've found schools here in the US to waste time with very general and unimportant subjects that should have been taught to students in high school.

There are, though, good aspects about the computer arts department in scad. The equip, as I've said, is state of the art... and there are plenty of it. Some of the staff is highly dedicated... and students, in general, are very friendly, fun and helpful.

one more thing... for whoever is thinking about coming here.

If you're gonna live on campus... and take my word on this... live somewhere you're not required to sign up for the meal plan. I repeat.. do NOT pay for that meal plan, lol, it's not good food and it's expensive as hell!!
Dyson/Weston house or Oglethorpe house are probably not where you want to live in (meal plan is mandatory there, from what I'm aware)
Oglethorpe house is generally the more partying of those... Dyson has smaller rooms, weston has bigger rooms, nicer pool, etc. Dyson/weston are right next to each other (in fact, everything here is walking distance... small city)
There are some new dormitories now, in the same area as D/W house.. they're supposed to be pretty good.
The best thing for anyone, though, as far as money and comfort are concerned, would be to find a fairly cheap place here in the historic distric (maybe share it with 1 or more ppl), which is close to everything.
You'll get more space, comfort, and be able to spend the money that otherwise would go to the meal plan on decent food... and still have some left.
Also, it's a dry campus.. which means they will try to enforce non drinking habits, etc on you as much as possible. All in all, having your own place is awesome :P

Gaussian3d- I've been thinking about appling to SCAD but I was wondering do they have any exchange programs to say...Japan...seeing as how I'd like to minor in Japanese...(I've been having a real fit finding a school that exchanges to Japan and has a good art program,I am going to Japan no matter what I have to do to get there...)lol

SCAD is a really good school according to what they've been sending me, and going there for college would be a dream for me. I only have been really seeing what they have to offer in these past couple of months, and I start to regret doing an early application to Hampshire College.

That DVD they sent me was absolutely insane. Congratulations.

However, it IS too far away from me, and getting home would be more then a problem on vacation. Hampshire College is more then what I wished for, and the 20,000 dollar grant (renewable) they gave me for my digital art was more then enough convincing. Congratulations again.

Scad doesn't really have strong language programs... They have a few classes of spanish, french... I think that's about it.
No japanese, that I'm aware of... sorry.

Mendler- Scad puts a huge effort on looking as attractive a college as possible.
It's a good fine arts college, but not a great computer arts one. People that get out of here, generally don't have anything to show on their portfolios. I work hard on my own, on a daily basis, to get a strong portfolio, reel, get skills and express a bit of my art .. but people generally just rely on classes, etc..
So you get an idea, I personally know both chairs of the department. The one of the comp arts and the one of the 3d dep. They should have been gone from here yrs ago... they are horrible as far as teaching go, fairly irresponsible, not dedicated at all.
But there are good professors. In fact, my Survey comp arts prof was one of the best ones I've had here.

I was also looking at Pensyvannia Academy of the fine Arts, it looks more substantial as far as foundation studies goes, but the weather is better in georgia
