ok.
i like to draw human figure, because they are beautiful.

and i dont like to draw alot, it is such a time consuming business.

so i think i should use 3D program to present the figure that i want to see in my mind. it is fast and simple. and i can reuse the 3D figure again if i want to see another angle of it. is it wonderful?
ok.

can some one tell me what i should use?

maya or 3dMax. what is the different?

It's a hell of a lot easier and quicker to just draw a character than to try and create one in any 3d app.

yep, I've heard people defend themselves saying sketching has run out of date.
That's not true at all. Bad sketchers don't turn into good 3D-modelers all of a sudden.

to even start seriously in 3D you HAVE to be good in sketching, anatomy, geometric understanding and have about 1 year of spare time to get your grips on a Package (and the only package really worth learning there is Maya - in my eyes that is).
Poser might be a good suggestion for you - however - Poser-Models somehow always look the same and unprofessional too.
Besides of that I've hardly ever seen a good 3D-Artist with less than 3-4 years of experience - so much for "fast"

good luck...

You could use 'Poser' - its sorta designed for stuff like that, and a lot cheaper and simpler than Maya or Max. I've even seen some good results from it. There's also the 'Shade' package from Japan, which has model packs for playing with your virtual people. It's a little pricey though.

It's definetely easier to draw/paint a fgure than it is to model and rig a good one in 3D. Good Luck!

The -only- quality you need to have to learn and develop your skills in 3D is patience. Patience in the long run will allow the user to understand how the program works and ultimately provide an opportunity for them to crank out whatever they want in an efficient manner.

Yes, having a good 2D foundation base is wonderful. But it is -not- a necessity. Sketching is a great skill to possess - no I don't mean the ability to draw out amazing sijun type pics, but the ability to put your ideas down on paper in order to facilitate the creation in 3D (concept art).

As for which program, well I'm assuming you're going through the land of warez, so money's no object. If that's the case then here's a quick breakdown.

3D Studio Max:

- Nice, sleek graphical user interface.
- Supports Poly, Subdivision, Spline modeling.
- Great set of modeling tools and plugins making it one of the most supported and developed set of tools around.
- Easy to use material editor.

Ultimately though, for most users, 3DSMax has somewhat of an easier learning curve. Although some people think differently, and they manage to grasp Maya much faster and easier than they do with Max - so again, depends on the person.

Maya:

- Supports Poly, Subdivision, and Nurbs Modeling.
- Nurbs modeling is a huge thing for a lot of people, and maya does a good enough job. Nurbs allows you to efficiently model stuff like cars, architectural stuff, etc..through surface creation. Whereas poly sub-d's is more of a sculpting type of modeling.
- Daunting program at first, until you are used to it.

I wouldn't say it takes a year to learn a program. You could probably pick up any program, just as long as it fits your workflow, and crank out models instantly after learning how to use its set of modeling tools.

Personally I would recommend you trying Softimage XSI. They have a promotion going on called XSI experience. It's an entirely free offer where softimage sends you a 2cd set of the full program itself and docs\tutorials. However you cannot save within the program and implements a stain into your renders. But this is as good as an opportunity you are going to have to try this out in a legit fashion =) XSI is used in nearly all aspects of the CG world - though it is not as popular as max and maya is.

Hope this helps,

Grimrock

I'm going to have to disagree, you have a much higher hurdle to clear if you suck at drawing. Being able to visualize what your going to do in your head and translateing it onto paper is of the utmost importance.
