I see posts from people in many different countries. Just how much of this mudball called earth can understand English while there are 2000 differnt languages out there?

I've always been told that in other countries, English is usually taught as a secondary language. Americans are just so fucking ignorant and take things for granted, we leave it as the student's choice if they want to learn another language. And even then (at least in my small high school) they only offer Spanish and French. I wanted to learn Latin before I took on another language, but it wasn't available. I know a little Spanish from being around a lot of hispanics here in Arizona (and other states amoung my journies). And some French that I learned from reading books along with an internet friend who lives in France. And so on.... I would love to learn Japanease, but I am not done learning English yet... hahaha... I can't even spell

Hey, I actually learned english as a kid by watching TV. And they say TV's bad for you...
Oh, and the 11 odd years spent at The English School can't have hurt.
As for other languages, I suck at 'em. I know that if I just put my mind to it I would probably learn, but my heart needs to be in it as well, and languages do not really fascinate me... Same as Jess, I'd love to learn Japanese (and Chinese), but I'm fundamentally lazy and can't be bothered. Maybe someday, if I get my shit together (yeah right).

Yeah. Most English speaking nations are not too hot at second languages (US/UK/Oz). I also foolishly believed that English was the "world language" until I visited Europe and Africa. Yikes! French is spoken in Europe, Africa, Asia and Canada! That's not even counting all the islands. As for me, I'm Afrikaans (Dutch dialect) and can speak English, French and Sotho (native African language in the NdeBele stream). Being Afrikaans also means that I can read and listen to Dutch and Flemish and even some German (Afrikaans is linguistically rated as a lower-germanic language).
As for Latin, is it really dead?
Consider this sentence:
English: Good night my friend
Latin: Bonus nocte amicus
Spanish: Buenos noches amigo
French: Bon noir ami. (crudely)
Can you see the relationship? Languages don't die, they just change.
Comparing Canadian French to France French:
A "hotdog" is"
Canada: Un chien chaud ("hot dog")
France: Un Hot-dog.
In the end, language is just a code of sounds between people who have agreed to let certain sounds convey certain meanings.
