what is the screen size of feature films?
and what I'm referring to is.... what size do artists work in, when creating imagery for films, whether it be matte work, or animation frames etc, etc..
I'm looking for size (height and inches proportions) and resolution (when pertaining to digital output), and what is the size of a screen in the local movie theaters... just a typical average... (since screens are varying sizes) at least that's my perception..
thanks |

It varies from movie to movie.
Panavision is something like 2048x871.
Vistavision is 2048x1366.
Super35 is 2048x1536, which is also the resolution of my Nikon Coolpix 995 digicam.
In short, there is no standard . . . if you're talking about 3D, resolution often depends on how nice your renderer is. Pixar can get by rendering at 1200x800, because they use PRRenderman which has very nice antialiasing and can render to postively obscene bitdepths. A studio using something with less robust filtering, say Mental Ray or Lightwave, or A:M, might have to render at double that resolution to keep their textures from scintillating. |

thanks Balistic....
do you know of any links that explain what
Panavision, Vistavision and Super 35
are further... I don't want to be a pain in the ass, but I was just curious. And I don't mean it for any specific intention. I wanted to adjust how I work when doing things like conceptual pics, etc etc, to fit a film size ratio (almost like heres a drawing of what it will look like exactly on the big screen)
I've looked for some resources myself but havent had any luck...
but otherwise thanks again for the previous info |

To get the general aspect ratio, divide the width by the height . . . Panavision works out to 2.35, which means its that much wider than it is tall. Wide aspect ratios like that are generally seen more in epic/historical films, whereas comedies and dramas will be closer to TV's aspect ratio.
There's really no standard, just a range of aspects. I've seen a graph that showed the aspect ratios of various famous movies, but I'd have no idea where to find it again.
Here's some other info though:

That should fill you in on the details. |
