after a suggestion that I should look up getting work at Blizzard in the area of concept art I was dissapointed to find that they basically assume that in this field you are capable of producing 3d models.
I am not interested in this area and was wondering if anyone here knows the chances of getting work at Blizzard or other similar companies without these skills?
Is 3d modelling almost a pre-requisite in this field of work? |

Most companies that I've heard of, like you to know some 3D because they can use you in other parts of the team (like a texture artist). Most of them contract out concept guys on a game to game bases, so it probably won't be a fulltime gig.
I'm not sure if Blizard themselves use this way of thinking so I say give them your porfolio and see what they say. |

thanks for the advise, could anyone also give me some names of other companies/developers who are producing mainly fantasy-based work such as Blizzard? |

there are lots of companies that do that...go to electronics boutique and write down the company names and websites on the boxes.
yes..3d is a plus. the only way you will get in on a pure concept job is if your concepts are so good that they dont want anyone else doing them. (IMHO) even then you need to be able to do it. a concept guy usually needs to use his or her paintings skills for textures and promo stuff. the concept phase is very early in the game development cycle...if that is all you can do then you could go work on another title within the company but if your company is working on only one title you will be laid off...simple as that....if you dont do the other stuff too anyway.
sorry for the bad grammar.
good luck with your stuff.
