Hi... I'm new here and would like to say that this is a great place...

I recently started my studies and the word composition seems to pop up now and then... What I would like to know is, what makes a good composition good and a bad composition bad??

Thanks for your time.

Here's a thread on that very subject:

Composition Thread

It's chocked full of info and talks about the basic elements of design. I suggest looking at a few painting while reading this and looking for each element mentioned.

Good luck,

well in responce to your question,,, i think a composition that keeps your eyes moving around the picture to different interest points make it a good one and a bad one keeps the focus on one area, but don't quote me..hope that helps.laters

i'm by no means an advanced artist or whatever, but just some things i've picked up...

never put the focal point in the center of the canvas. try to make it off centered

i also try to make a path for your eyes. I want to make your eye go to the focal point, and then go somewhere else, then the next point,...etc. until it comes back to the focal point.
I know that having everything pointing in towards the focal point helps, like on the Last Supper, everyone is looking over at Jesus, and naturally when someone is looking at something, you want to see what they're looking at. Even the vanishing point in the picture is jesus... he is truly the center of interest in that painting.

just my 1 1/2 cents

It would be interesting to ask a person who does not know who is who in the Last Supper and has never seen the pic before where he/she is looking at..
