The monitor and computer I am using right now was bought through ebay. The monitor was used but the PC was new. It can be kind of intimidating at first (first thing I bought was a CD) I have never had a very serious problem. My shipment was a bit delayed on my PC but I did get it. So that was probably the worst thing.
By giving them your credit card it they are only going to charge you like 1-5 dollars for posting your own auctions. they DON'T charge you for bidding. All transactions are done between 2 private people. You CAN pay the other person with a credit card by using PAYPAL but I have never used that and can't say how it works.
If you are bidding on something as big as a monitor make sure the seller has good feedback, and probably quite a bit of it. Maybe even read some of their comments just to get a better feel.
Other than that it is pretty much a breeze. Good luck!

Definitely check all the feedback, and if you're involved in a large exchange (e.g. monitors) get as much of the person's information as possible if you need to contact them. The only danger in buying from eBay is the occasional seller who wants to rip you off. It's happened to me once, but if I had gotten their info, I would have been able to easily contact them and harass them or take a road trip to their house and rough them up. I'd suggest getting their phone number and home address. The vast majority of eBay transactions are fine, but there's always a slight risk, so just take precautions. But you should be fine. |

my cousin bought a computer off of there (it might have been Yahoo... but it was like Ebay where two people exchange privately, or whatever)
he sent him the money, but the guy never sent him the computer. Apparently the same guy did this to a bunch of other people too (bunch, meaning 7 or 8) and they all reported him to the police... apparently they're still looking for him, or hopefully, found him.
the chances of that happening aren't too much. if you found out all their info, such as address, phone number, blood type, cup size, and social security number then i'm sure you'll be fine. |

Actually, I just read a report that fraud on ebay was fairly high and judging by the unhappy complaints of people who'd been ripped off, there's little ebay seems willing to do about it. This, of course, is always a risk when purchasing an auction item over the internet, but I mention it because this article specifically mentioned computers and related items as being the largest fraud sale.
While I would trust ebay with a credit card (check w/ your company to see what their policy is about internet fraud) I wouldn't give it to anyone selling something. I would select a more secure method of payment for expensive items, since you're dealing with the seller whom you know little to nothing about. Most of the stories where people are ripped off involved Paypal transfers, which seems to offer little recourse in the event of a bum deal.
That said, if you shop carefully, ebay can be a great place to pick up some bargains.
