New? Its been around for at least three years
I used one at SIGGRAPH 2000, and found the slight lag of the stroke behind my hand to be somewhat annoying. Also, they only run at 1024x768 resolution, which is pretty cramped, and they are LCD displays, which have a limited viewing area and questionable color reproduction.
I'd hold off for a couple years and see where the technology is at by then. |

its expensive and only designed for rich people who dont draw often or for the superduper Nasa professional who really need it for a very specific purposes which doesnt involve drawing. |

Hmmm, what if money wasn't an issue... if you had the choice of either have a professional big size monitor and a standard wacom tablet...OR... a wacom/monitor.
The reason why I'm asking is I'm testing out the product for work, the price has came down significantly...enough that if it's really cool for a concept painter to use they might switch us over.
I'm finding that the monitor resolution is too low, but I have more control painting/drawing. I get to play with it for a week...I'm not sold yet. |

I use one (the PL400 anyways). I happen to like it alot, but I can't find the $2000 price justifiable when a $90 normal wacom will do just fine. The lag problem is usually solved with either a fast video card or alot of RAM, or both.
It's really meant to be used in tandem with high end workstations and are being used quite a bit for digital matte painting at special FX houses. If I'm not mistaken, I believe Craig Mullins uses one. I found the biggest advantage to using one is that it saves time when you're trying to find your cursor to orientate where you are after you've had to take your eyes off the image for some various reason. It sounds trivial, but those precious seconds add up to quite a bit of time after a while. It's definitely a luxury item, but I'm saving up for one for the home, heheh. |

I have an old wacom artz tablet. I think it is from 96-97. I did not use it until about 99, so it does not have that many miles.
It has an ADB connection, a dead mac-only thing. The USB converter works OK, but not when I go to the new OS. That is if i don't go PC, which I like better anyway.
I will have to buy a new one with my next computer. The USB forces the issue.
If you are into blowing money, I REALLY like how the 22 inch apple cinema displays look. There is an issue of seeing my work on something close to what clients see it on, though. |

I stand corrected. I don't remember where I got the notion that you use an LCD wacom. |

Thanks for those who responded. I've been testing the CintiQ for 3 days. The concept is cool, it's like playing on a hi-tech etcha-a-sketch <sp?>.... Does it feel closer to "real" painting, no. |

Hmm,
bummer that the resolution is too low. I personally think that would be the IDEAL way to paint.. seeing the lines as you draw them etc.
I don't know. Maybe I'm a hopeless idealist but I am infatuated with the idea of getting the awkwardness out of the interface for drawing/painting in the digital media.
I heard all of these same critiques for the old pl400 series but I'd only read good reviews of the newer Cintiq. Oh, well. At least the price point has come down closer to my daydreamable levels. Well, I STILL plan to be using one someday. Not anytime soon but someday.... (and if I wait long enough they'll have worked all the bugs out before I get it
