The written word does not translate sarcasm very well, and people who joke on-line rarely leaves unscarred.
The written word can often lead to horrible misunderstandings and the people involved in these rarely end up liking each other very much.

My question is: Is all this really nessecary? How come people forget this in an instant, and go to war over a petty litle hint of "something" in a random thread?

I've experienced this firsthand (second) because my girlfriend and my mother wrote some letters to one another...I'm vary sad to see an obvious misunderstanding turn into a bitter affair.

So come on people, don't pick fights over such things, please!!!

The written word can be used, IMO, to portray any type of expression needed. In some cases it might be necessary to use more elaborate writing and as a last resort you can even throw in some visual aids with smileys :P bold type and *asterisks* to draw attention to a word that is key to a correct interpretation of a phrase.

Sarcasm is, however, not a very nice way of communicatating, I rarely use it and find it offensive when used by others in dialogue.

There is nothing more saddening than two complete strangers having a verbal battle over a misunderstanding on-line. What many forget is that there are actual (human :eek users behind every username.
