a coworker of mine approached me with a commission today. he wants me to illustrate chapter header designs and a design to emboss into the front and binding of his book he's getting published. he wants the design to be in the mid-1900 style. you now, flowery and ..i dunno, sort of french looking.
until now i've only gotten 'real' commissions for webpages. what does one charge someone for art like this? hourly? by the picture?
any advice would be SO appreciated. thanks a ton. |

Sorry, can't help you with the pricing - I'm just an amateur yet. But the style you're referring to, I believe it's Art Noveau... so if you need reference, that's one thing you could do a search for.
Anyone else can help us out here? I would also like to know what prices are in general... what have you people without an established reputation been paid within the digital industry? What should a starting artist ask for? |

yeah, it looks sort of art noveau.. but i want to call it rococo, too. but you know what i mean.
he's told me this book is going to sell for around $400 a piece. so i don't think i need to undercut myself in what i should ask to be paid. if that helps at all. |

if you are not sure what to charge the best way (the way I did it during my freelance time) is to figure out what you need per hour to do the work. factor in things like client profile (small or large company etc..), whether you want to do the work or not, how much you need to get by while doing the work. Charge what you think is fair. Also ALWAYS ask for 20 percent more than you want. Often, they will bite and you can go home happy....other times you can just negotiate down.
good luck.
