Hi Im pretty new to the forums, Ive just been a passive observer for ages. Ive decided to get myself sorted out and put up some of my bits n bobs up for people to see. I started out as an artist and ended up as a designer but I will be posting pictures as well as graphics. I was wondering whether there are other graphic designers in here, or whether theres a specific place I have to post graphics? Anyway Ill stick some up here because Im sure itll interest a few of you ... any help would be gratefully accepted... cheers |

Welcome jolyn,
I am sure there are graphic designers here. A few things to keep in mind. Gallery is for finished works, Work in Progress is for new uncompleted images and Digital Art Discussions is for general chating and converstation. This introduction, nice that it is, belongs in the Digital Art Discussions forum, unless you wanted to put up a link to a web site or a small collection of work you have done. There are always new people on the board and it is great when they go and read the FAQ, to save trouble later.
Good luck, this is a fantastic place to be. Looking forward to seeing your stuff.
JA

Thanks for the speedy reply. Sorry to have been a nuisance and not read the FAQ, but I never tend to. I was really asking not whether I could talk about Graphic design in here, but whether I could post it because thats what Ill be doing as soon as I know. Now I do, Ill get some stuff up for people to look at. Thanks for your help. Samburger thanks for the moral support mate, I may be asking for your C&C in the future if thats cool? Cheers, and thanks for the warm welcome... |

Darn thing about script messasges is that people don't here the intended tone in ones message. I was not upset at all. Just thought some words of wisdom might save you some scripted thrashings later. We all make mistakes (I made the same one when I first loged on).
peace

count me in on learning graphic design also. To me it is still art, I mean if you can call abstract art; art, then graphic design is also a combination of technical skill and talent. I liked to see some ideas, I have some. |

I'm a graphic design major as well. The difference between graphic design and 'fine art' is essentially that graphic design's primary function is 'efficiency of communication'. In that respect it is more based around being functional than 'being pretty'. In fact, if I were to present my design to my instructors with the explanation, 'Because I think it looks good', they'd rip me to pieces :)
Keep in mind I'm not saying fine art does not have 'a function' or doesn't communicate anything -- nearly everything has a message of some kind -- just that the focus of effective design is not aesthetics. Actually, now that I think about it, sometimes it is the most horrible aesthetic that gets the point across best. :) |

To me webdesign is definitely art. Its in many ways as graphical design, which i would also call a form of art. |

there are definitely a lot of people into graphic design here, but just be prepared with kind of response you will likely receive.
ppl tend to prefer paintings over just design, and if you are at a novice in gd you will prolly get a lot of flak.
but as long as you are polite and ask for honest comments and criticism all should be well. |

Hi thanks to everyone for their advice.
Its great to finally find somewhere designers and artists can have a good discussion, and crit each others work! Hope to be seeing loads of your and my design work up here in hte near future I wonder if one day we could even have our own dedicated graphics Forum... hmmm
Anyway heres a wee sample of a job including graphics and painting theres a few kinks still to be ironed out but overall Im pleased with it.. |
