The biggest feature that isn't in painter classic is layer support. There's that fake layer thing in classic but it is so shody as to be completely useless. There are more controls available in painter and more brushes available and it is a bit less buggy too in my opinion. And I'm sure there are many other differences but what it basically came down to me was that painter I can use while classic just gives me a big headache. |

Hi,
If you were using Painter, you probably wouldn't be asking the question about which to use.. paintbrush or airbrush. You'd be having too much fun experimenting and discovering new ways to paint and creating your own brushes.. and using several if not many of them.
There are literally hundreds of choices in Painter's drawing and painting tools, just in the default Painter Brush Library that's installed with Painter and then there are many more Brush Libraries on the CD, in third party Painter books, and available on the Web. In the default Painter Brush Library, there are 17 Brush Categories, each containing a number of Brush Variants:
Airbrushes (10 Variants)
Artists (6 Variants)
Brushes (16 Variants)
Cloners (34 Variants)
Dry Media (13 Variants)
Erasers (5 Variants)
F-X (11 Variants)
Felt Pens (5 Variants)
Image Hose (20 Variants)
Impasto (32 Variants)
Liquid Ink (48 Variants)
Liquid (13 Variants)
Pattern Pens (8 Variants)
Pencils (9 Variants)
Pens (11 Variants)
Photo (9 Variants)
Water Color (43 Variants)
About Painter Classic vs. "later versions". Painter Classic is not part of the series of full Painter versions so there is no "later version". Though it's based on Painter 5, it's an extremely limited taste of what even an older full Painter version offered. Basically, it's an appetizer to get people interested.
In Painter Classic, you can do none of the following that can be done in full versions. This list is just a small sampling and some of these items are improved in later versions, i.e. Painter 5 had Floaters and Transparent Layers, with Painter 6 those were eliminated and we now have Layers.
PAINTER 5:
Multiple Floaters and Transparent Layers managed in a Floaters List.
User Masks (created by making and saving a Selection)
Visibility Masks associated with each Floater or Transparent Layer.
Objects Palette containing sections for Floaters, Masks, Scripts, etc.
Palette menus (inaccessible in Painter Classic)
Main menus for Select, Movie, and Shapes
Many additions to the Effects menu options
Save Palette Layouts
Create Custom Palettes
Brush, Papers, Patterns, Gradients, Weaves, Lighting, Scripts Libraries managed in the Mover utilities.
Many Brush Controls settings.
Create your own Custom Brush Libraries/Categories/Variants
Dynamic Plugin Floaters for Bevel World, Kaleidoscope, Liquid Metal, Impasto, etc.
Movies feature to create QuickTime movies and frames for animated GIFs
Grid, Rulers, and Guides
Vector based Shapes created with the Pen tool, Rectangular Shape, and Oval Shape tools
PAINTER 6 New/Improved:
New Layers (no more Floaters or Transparent Layers
New Can now make Selections on Layers
New Impasto Brush Category with many Variants
New Impasto Layer (invisible as a Layer, but displays the Impasto effect of light and shadows)
New Impasto Lighting
New Pattern Pen Variants that paint the Pattern within the brush stroke itself
New Woodcut Feature
New Hard copy and browser based User Guide
Improved Brush Controls
Dynamic Text/Dynamic Text Layer - can adjust size, color, fill, curve or no curve, drop shadow, etc.
PAINTER 7 Added/Improved:
New Water Color technology - behaves like real watercolor, paint can be made to flow in a given direction, wetness, pickup, dry rate, evaporation threshold, amount of diffusion, capillary factor, grain soak in and wind direction controls.
New Multiple Water Color Layers - Canvas can be lifted to Water Color Layer, then made wet and take on the characteristics of the currently active Water Color Brush Variant and Paper texture interaction.
New Multiple Liquid Ink Layers
New Liquid Ink Brush Category and Variants - can upsample and retain smooth edges - can add/adjust Depth and adjust brush stroke density dynamically.
New Distress feature
New Serigraphy Effect feature
Hard copy and Web based User Guide, Help menu link to Online Tutorials, Tech Support
