Well, I'm not attending there myself... But I did just apply there for next year's Art Fundamentals program. My reasons:

First, I think I need this course to progress into any other art related programs there, since my skills could still use some work. Second, I have not actually decided what I actually want to progress into, but it will most likely be animation or illustration. Art funamentals will hopefully help me decide. And lastly, I remember reading people's comments on getting into Sheridan's art courses, and many have said that unless you have some fine skills or some industry experience under your belt, going through art fundamentals is the only 'safe' way to attend the college. By taking this one year course you are not only becomming a member of the college, but I've read somewhere you can get advanced standing into one of the three year course (ie: illustration) by having good marks in art fundamentals. Plus, if you're already in there, you can go check out the other programs and even speak with teachers/students in them and get a good idea of how it may be useful to you. Seems like a good route to me.

As far as advice if you want to head into a 3 year program directly, I can't say with experience, but I have done mucho research on the subject since I'm planning on attending there myself. To get clear advice from others here, you'll have to tell them what program you're considering. I do know for a fact that things like anime drawings are not very well liked at all, so if you draw in that style (or any heavily stylized work, for that matter), you'll want to keep that out of your portfolio for sure. I remember reading that they want to see people that can be shown the ways easily, meaning... If you constantly draw in a certain style that is clearly present, you will have a harder time getting in that someone who shows work that is, shall we say, of the norm. Something that clearly shows what skills you have and not much else will be ideal for a portfolio. I also know that if you're thinking about something like illustration or animation, you'll definately want to include life drawings, and plenty of them.

But, what the hell... Art fundies doesn't even require a portfolio! This info is something to get you started I guess, anyway. If some of it's wrong, I'm sorry, I'm basing much of it on memory (and mine isn't always the best).

Heheh

EDIT: BTW, if anyone here has completed art fundies or one of the 3 year programs, I'd really really like to hear your impressions of them, if you enjoyed yourself, if you had a good learning experience, and how much freedom you actually had. Getting an honest opinion from a graduate of this college has been hard for me to find so far.

Hey, I'm taking continuing education there...life drawing, painting...I'm thinking of doing illustration there, or in calgary at ACAD.

I've talked to illustration, and art fundy students. Not sure how good your portfolio needs to be to get in, but you sure will be kicked out if you can't keep up with the work load once your in! If you are confident in your abilities, I'm sure you will be fine. If you have any questions just email me.

Um.. stuff. Heh.
When you apply, they send you a list of exactly what they want, so it's pretty much a no-brainer. There are a few specific things they like to see in an animation application, though -- good, solid life drawing; good grasp of perspective; tight line quality; structure lines like crazy, wherever you can possibly leave 'em showing.

For the extra pieces you're asked to submit (being whatever you want, basically, except the stuff they list as being no good for them on the app.), I was told ahead of time that they like realism, a lot. So, I put a portrait of a friend in there, and magically made it through the first cut. They do want to see realism, rather than "cartooning" -- it's easy to tweak your style into caricature-esque stuff if you already have a good grasp of realistic structure, proportions, etc.

Euh. On a side-note... grades aren't a big deal, save English or whatever the requirement is -- I'm living proof of that, as I was a slacky loser in high school.

Hey I heard they wanted storeyboarding this year for animation. Not sure if they are going to provide the story and you have to board it, or if you have to create your own. Anyway, prepare for that.
