I�ve heard of customized pencils in ps. Is it any good, what is it and how do you do it?

You mean custom brushes?
If so, then here is how you do it:
Make new file (the size that you want your brush to be like 64x64) with white background. Draw up some stuff on there (texture/shape) and select all, then on brushes window click in the corner and choose define brush.
