Sorry to bring it up again, but someone asked for a link in a recently closed topic, here is the link - Frazetta's own official website: http://www.frazettaartgallery.com/ff/index.html
In the members area is a board with these quotes from FRANK FRAZETTA himself (below). Unfortunately they're not accepting any more members, so I take the liberty to post these quotes here so anyone interested in the recent discussion about Mike Hoffman's work can read them (since IMHO they are highly relevant).
FF:
"Although it is one of the highest compliments when someone
copies your work, it doesn't flatter me in any way. I have always
said an artist is one who creates, so if you feel
good when you reproduce art that does not come from within you
are only kidding yourself."
And again, in response to another question:
FF:
"I understand your thoughts, but the problem with Ken Kelly and many of my imitators is they can not let go. They are so caught up in my every detail and actions they seem to forget or are afraid to stray away from what love to draw. Ken Kelly says he is influenced by my work but he never ever copies my stuff. There is just one of the hundreds of guys who think they have their own style but they will readily steal bits and pieces from various pictures and take credit of their own. There is nothing wrong with copying some of my art to learn from but you must mature , learn and move forward with your own style."
(Moderators feel free to close this topic right away, not looking for replies just wanted everyone to get the facts straight from the source.) |

Thank you Steven.
It's nice to see what the man himself has to say on the issue.

An entertaining and educational thread that was. I was equally insulted as was many others by said individuals patronizing behavior. I'm a 22 year old hack living with my parents? My wife won't like that...
But in retrospect, what I've taken of all that fun was the oft quoted and ironically prudent phrase "those that can't, teach".
Heh.
Thank you, - everyone - for this weeks lesson in life.

nice to see that Frazetta himself thinks the same way about it as Lemen, Gist and most people, me included, who replied to the mentioned thread. I feel much better now .
OFFTOPIC (sorry ): does anybody know why the Frazetta family decided to stop accepting new members for the members area?
They closed it a few days BEFORE i tried to sign up... damn, i would love to see the stuff in it... are there realy figure studies and all this? damn... |

I couldn't agree more. That is the true gist...the straight dope. That is precisely what I preach, for in copying, one can learn how it's done; once it's learned how, then one must start to dress it up in their own unique style thus moving away from the copied work. I honestly cannot see how some people cannot move on; how can they look at their work and claim it to be their own? I just don't get it.
