For anyone with any interest in scifi or fantasy art you should run down to your local book store and buy the 2001 edition of Spectrum. More than 150 pages of some of the best genre artwork from the past year, and a great overview of the 'fantastic' arts.

There's a Sijun names in there. Justin Sweet did very well, with several images included plus he got the silver award for the 'Institutional' section. Matt Stawicki has a number of images includes and also picked up silver for 'Advertising'. John Mueller has one of his very cool Quake 3 Arena paintings includes, although thats not digital so has lesser value. Even Framestore have a couple of dinosaur images included, although I don't know if they include the dinos that Danny worked on. No Spooge unfortunately.

Great book anyway.

Already got my copy! Did you notice it was thinner than last years? Also, you forgot to mention Don Seigmiller, who also had an entry and sometimes haunts Sijun too. Good stuff!

Hmm ironically last night i was at my friends house and he had it and i wasnt tooo impressed with the pictures. I mean they are great and all and im really happy that all these sijun people did get in there.. Good job. I own the spectrum 5 book and i personally thought AS a WHOLE it was better than this years. I looked through spectrum 8 for about 20 mins maybe i didnt pay attention enough... What i mean is that there are some good picvtures but i didnt like most of them.... They were tooo um common if you know what i mean....

hey...

there are three black isle guys in there this time around...justin sweet...vance kovacs and john dickenson...not too bad for video game dudes...ehehe

the color in that book....its totally whacked...Ive seen those guys original imagery and the reproductions barely resemble the stuff.

oh well...still good to see the stuff though.

Pat: oops, yeah I forgot to mention the Don!

Jason: with digital images looking so different from monitor to monitor I guess converting them into CYMK is only going to multiply the problem. (did you enter any pictures this year?)

Speaking of color weirdness, did anyone notice something amiss with the Brom image on page 28? It looks like the plates were reversed or something because the colors are really odd. Anyone seen that image reproduced anywhere else?

Yeah, either Brom has suddenly come under the influence of the post-Dave McKean school of 'dezign' art or that printing is screwed up. Hoping the latter.

Suma:

I doubt UK high street book shops stock it.

Is this the one? http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/188742461X/o/qid=1005929943/sr=8-1/ref=sr_aps_b_1_1/026-8722374-4781248

How would I get in there? My work is not on that level, I think.

Ironically enough, the ugliest job I ever did, one that I could not stand to look at, was submitted by the client to Spectrum. I got a letter saying it was accepted, but I guess it never made it in. Thankfully.

Underwood Books sends out a call for entries in October. I gather there are a number of rules, forms to fill out and a fee. If you're clients aren't doing it for you, I suggest getting in contact with them directly and submitting some of your own work. Each year there are a number of "Self Promotion"/"Unpublished" works accepted. Your work should be in there.

Try this address:

Underwood Books

Overland Park, KS 66204

Whoa Craig, you are much, much too modest. Your artwork definitely belongs in any Spectrum annual.

Does Justin Sweet or any of the other artists on these forums publish their own books? I'd really be interested in buying their stuff if they do

Pat, Sumaleth: Yes, the colors of that image are screwed up, it's like the color depth was reduced to 8 bits or less. The same painting can be found in Brom's new Offerings art book and the colors look fine. The image is cropped to fit in one page though.

The picture details offer information about an artist, an art director and a designer. What does that mean? I mean, I can imagine what the artist and the art director do. The artist creates the picture, the art-director gives advise and makes sure that the clients expectations are met. But what does the designer do?

s4sb: sometimes the design or linework is done by a different artist.

Immy: they're all pretty much the same really, but later editions have more pages so they're better in that respect. The digital-art content is the best in 8 that it's every been too.

...In my honest opinion all of the spectrum books are worth getting. The varity and the works in them are SO inspiring... I own them all, besides the first one, which is pretty hard to find... At least here in Denmark!
