I've recently spent a lot of time reading and researching Bouguereau (for my own benefit), and I must say that I admire him a great deal. I mean, I learned about him a bit in Art History back in high school but I never took the time to REALLY familiarize myself with him and his work. I think he is incredible. The reason (at least for me) is because he pays soooo much attention to the smallest detail. Check this out:
I love those little blobs of colour! It is so quaint, yet so impactful at the same time.
Maybe I'm just insane. :/ |

did you notice that that is the same palette that rembrandt, velasquez, sargent used in their work...it is even the same color palette he used for that very painting. he moves his color around very well in that piece...though it isnt a favorite of mine..it is still amazing.

I used to worship Bouguereau when I was a teenager. Now, I prefer Waterhouse among the neo-classists. Bouguereau is very polished, but he lacks spontaneity, emotions, and unpredictability(compared to Waterhouse, that is).
At some point, I went from "visible brush strokes is a sign of inferior technique," to "Goddamn! Look at those spontaneous brush strokes!"
Sargent. Yummy. |

more academic or more impressionistic - cool thing is, they are all using the same classic tools (tools in the sense of "no rules, just tools" of mr. Glen Vilppu ) |
