Hey there. I've used plenty of Photoshop and I tried Painter5 a long time ago, but could never get "used" to it (seemed sort of complex, and i didn't want to spend the time on it), but now with Painter 7, I gave it another shot and, well, it looks interesting
One big question I have, is... Photoshop has the ability that when you use the airbrush, you can directly paint on the multiply or "screen" mode without using extra layers. I can't figure out how to do this in Painter. The only way I can see is through layers, but is there any other way to say "highlight" something without overlaying the details with unnecessary color? (basically so all detail still shows through and you only highlight shadows/midtones/highlights)? Is this doable, or are layers the only way?

Most tools in Painter can't be modified with different screen modes like the drawing tools in Photoshop. To achieve the same effects you'll have to use layers.
Of note, Painter tools can't have different modes because they already have a specific mode assigned to them. For instance, many of the "cover" based tools like marker and crayon have the Photoshop equivalent of "Multiply" assigned to them. Were they not to have this mode, they wouldn't function very close to their natural media counterparts.
