I was wondering if any of you would know what the job market is like in France for illustration? Can one survive there doing it or would you need to get a real job? Also, I I would imagine that you would need some kind of work permit or something like that too right? Can you get one if you wanted to be a freelancer?

K.

hi megatroid

i guess the french job market is quite similar to the us one; most jobs here are concentred in 3d (mostly video games) or webdesign; print stuff is also well developped and hiring sometimes.

Pure Illustration work is hard to find, most of the skillfull illustrators are working for foreign companies

Concerning the work permit , you must own what is called here "une carte de sjour", I guess they can give it to you if you marry a french girl or if you find a legal job here in France ( i think there is other ways too); I've heard it was easier to get this card than the Us green card.

Freelancing is like in other countries, you have to write tons of sheets and the state sucks most of the time 50% of your money

Sorry for my bad english, hope what i said does make sense

(if you speak french, don't hesitate to email me, i think i could explain you the things better

there is many french people hanging around here, hope they will add more comments to help you

cheers
Toasty

There is about NO market for illustration in France. I know several people who tried to work there. There are very few game companies. Comics can be a better solution but it's very difficult to find anything without the right connections (there is a big 'comic mafia' in France).
My advice: don't go there. Just don't go there.
Believe me, it took me long enough to escape from this place and I will never go back.

Toasty,

Thanks for the reply to my post, your the first so far. If I do move over there then it will be in a few years. I'm just trying to get an idea for what it may be like and I'm also adding some other skills to my repertoire before I go.

Any info is helpful and your english is great, way better than my French!
