I use several different brands of acrylic paints. Golden, Finity, Liquitex and stuff. I never used Titanium White for a while. Following frm. Spooge Dragon's advice, I use gesso instead of tube whites.
Painting military buildings and weapon is pain in the ass. They are painted with dim neutral grey, neutralized red and sand yellow! I have no idea what kind of colors should I mix to create those 'dead' colors! They don't interact with sunlight very much. And I have a poor sense of creating colors.
Finity Acrylic has violet color, so I bought it recently. I used Dioxazine Purple (!) as the complementary color of Cadmium Yellow Med. >_< Now I now why my yellows end up looking so garish. I try not to mix more than 2 colors plus gesso white. 3 or more colors will make muds. Anyway... These are my pallete for Acrylics.
Ultramarine Blue
Pthalo Blue
Sap Green
Alizarin Crimson (Finity version)
Cad. Red Med.
Cad. Orange
Yellow Oxide (or Yellow ochre if available)
Cad. Yellow Med
Dioxazine Purple
Burnt Umber
Burnt Sienna
Raw Sienna
Unbleached Titanium
For oil color, I started to use water-mixable oil paints like Artisan. Well, I found that water is only good for cleaning up the brush, but never meant to be a medium. You still need mediums like linseed oil and terpentine. My oil palettes are pretty much same as acrylic paints, except that I have Cerulean Blue, Venetian Red (too strong! Don't use it) and some other colors that I can't remember.
I tried to use those 'hue' colors instead of actual cadmium colors, but it never worked. (not surprisingly) What colors do you guys use?
For brushes, my favorite is W&N Galleria brushes. Maybe you guys will beg for differ, but I feel comfortable with them. I hate hog hair brushes, especially for acrylic paintings. I don't like W&N Academic brushes because they never last long. -_-; What kind of brushes do you guys use? |

Red, Blue, Yellow, White (acrylics).
Big house paint brush, big round brush, medium round brush, little round brush.
I always felt stupid buying a tube of anything non-primary . . . I mean, hell, I'll mix it if I need it. |
