I'm surprised at how much trouble I'm having finding Dantes Inferno. I need it for a reference to help me with part of my drawing. Does anyone know were I could get it?

Thanks

Thanks for the help guys, maybe it's my mistake. I thought there was a painting called Dante's Inferno by Michelangelo. Maybe my teacher said another name, but maybe you can help me out anyways. I need a painting with people or demons wrestling.

There are many paintings like what you're describing. Part of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel (which was designed and in part painted by Michaelangelo) depicts damned souls in Hell, which may be what your teacher was referring to. There is a painting by Bouguereau called "Dante et Virgile au Enfers" which depicts demons and wrestling souls. You can find it at www.artrenewal.org , I believe.

Here is my favorite painting from Dante's Inferno. It's by Eugene Delacroix, and is called "The Bark of Dante". Dante is riding on the river Lethe (or Styx, whatever) where memory is lost. With him is the poet Virgil, and the boatman Charon (with his backed turned totally Michelangelo style). As they ride towards the perpetually burning city of Dys (sp?), souls try desperately to get onto their boat. One dead Florentine is so deranged he bites the bow of the boat.
Damn this is a cool painting. Though the color on this particular one is a little messed up. I think this painting had a big influence on the movie "What Dreams May Come".

Hi,

Here's a link to a Dover publication (these are always very affordable). It's the illustrations that William Blake did for Dante's Inferno. I've looked through this book before, and it's really nice.

Description from the website:
"135 fantastic and grotesque scenes depict the passion and grandeur of one of Dantes most highly regarded worksfrom the depths of hell onto the mountain of purgatory and up to the empyrean realms of paradise. Includes plates produced for The Inferno, Pur"
